Posted November 20, 200618 yr okay i was slowly getting my 2 birds used to my hand. They would let me stroke them. But now they run from my hand every time it enters the cage. I don't like to wing clip so what should i do?
November 21, 200618 yr Go to www.budgietalk.com and click on taming tips there is so many good ideas that I couldn't even possibily type it all out
November 21, 200618 yr Author I think i'll try the hand in cage method, I won't move it towards them, i'll just camly keep it in the one place until they work up the nerve to approach it. I think the male is more frightned than the female
November 21, 200618 yr if they like millett use that too once they eat it out of your hand then you can move it in such a way that the only way they can eat it is to jump on your hand. I did that with Merlin works like a gem
November 29, 200618 yr Author It seems that the longer they are together the more they would move from my hand. In the beginning i was makin good progress and when they started bonding they would normally run together. Like if bluey decided i want to move over to the other side of cage, tweety followed. Although when my hand is near, and steady, they wont run because they are together. i'll keep trying.
November 29, 200618 yr this is very normal mine do the same exact thing so work with the one that doesn't run from you only and the other one will follow suit don't give up. my 2 can be stinkers at times. Pretty runs from me and there goes Merlin errr (Laughing out loud) But if I can get Merlin by himself he is a sweetie. Pretty is the stinky of the bunch
November 30, 200618 yr Author (Laughing out loud) Suppose, When i've gotten tweety alone, she would allow me to approach and she would not move a muscle, She would allow me to stroke her chest at times. She has given me a few quick nips aswell showing that she is becoming less afraid of my hand as she plucked up the courage to nip it. Do u think it wud be best if i kept my hand in one place of the cage and not approach them? Let them approach my hand?
November 30, 200618 yr Just a note she is probably scared stiff that is why she is not moving (just being honest with you) and budgies usually don't like their chest stroked but their necks and heads (I learned that here) Do they like millet that is my motivator with mine. I started with setting my hand in the cage where they were perches and let them see the millet first. Once they were comfortable eating from my hand I would move the millet closer to my finger and then over where they eventually had to stand on my finger to get the treat. Works different with each bird. Merlin goes for it, Pretty waits until Merlin is already on my finger then he flys to me. Note, I had Pretty first and he regressed when I got Merlin but I knew that would happen with 2 that was a chance I took. Hope that helps.
November 30, 200618 yr Author Yea its working great. I was gaining his trust. He was eating the millet, i was slowly moving it towards my hand, but haven't got a chance to do it as my nephew and nieces come in screaming the place down and coming very close to the cage. I've always found the hand taming the hardest. With my old bird who lived to 10 years old. The day i got him to go on my hand, he was shoulder trained almost instantly.
November 30, 200618 yr Every bird is different and I find that those who have the real cuddly ones are single birds (or where handraised by the person - ex Bea), when you have 2 together they cuddle with each other. If I wouldn't have gotten Merlin I believe Pretty would have turned into one of those because right before I got him he was talking and giving me kisses along with running to the side of the cage. Now he doesn't do any of that because Merlin is his buddy but that is okay. I couldn't imagine him to having a playmate.
November 30, 200618 yr Author (Laughing out loud) Yea. Ex-Tweety was alone in the cage. And everytime she saw u enter the room or breathed a noise she screamed with happiness. She would jump to the side of the cage of where u were for attention. She thought she was a human thinking she cud sit on the sofas, watch tv, do everything herself. She refused to ever be brought outta the cage by herself, she would jump on the door and fly straight towards u. She managed to even make tons of great escapes. she always lifted the seat container, spilled it, and climbed out, and everytime, she scared the living *** outta me as i would probably taking a nap and then the next second i look, she was just infront of me chirping. I had some alone time for a training session finally. Working like a charm. Although bluey refuses tweety of getting some of the millet. He kept approaching, taking a bite, and running back across. I moved the millet so far that he wud have to step up on my finger, He was so close many of times but didn't get there, but hey early days yet
November 30, 200618 yr That sounds so similar to my grandma's single budgie years ago, they really thrive companionship so if they can't get it from another bird you are the best thing . Good job day 1 and there is progress it may take a few days you may also want to split up the millett and hold a piece in 2 different hands giving them both an opportunity. Pretty chases Merlin away so I need 2 hands to feed it to them now.

Good job day 1 and there is progress it may take a few days you may also want to split up the millett and hold a piece in 2 different hands giving them both an opportunity. Pretty chases Merlin away so I need 2 hands to feed it to them now. Training is going okay. Bluey is starting to step up a few times with one foot, but requires alot of encouragement, he even has stepped up fully but when he realises wat has happened he gioes to the perch. Tweety on the other hand is just aint interested. I offer he millet but it takes huge enocouragement at times for her to eat some from my hand, although if she sees bluey eating she will do also. i hav managed her to step up on one foot once, but it was brief. I've noticed it is so hard to train budgies when there is another budgie in the cage. Ex-Tweety was trained so fast it was unbelievable, but i guess different birds, different speeds. I have a question though, When i leave millet in the cage, they normally make a huge mess all over the table and floor. And they always seem to pull it down when the spray isn't finished. Where is the best spot to put millet to avoid this? Also they both never wanna venture to the bottom of the cage, no matter wat. As i was thinking of putting the millet down there but they never go down to get any of it.
