Posted November 17, 200618 yr just was wondering for future reference is it okay to put the nesting box on the floor of the cage, if the cage is off the ground ??
November 17, 200618 yr Yes if you have no other way the box can sit at the bottom of the cage. Sometimes like that it is harder to get the babies in or out and even to look into the box. But my first time with breeding I put the box on the cage ground.
November 17, 200618 yr Author Thanks Nerwen, the reason I ask is the hen that I eventually want to breed doesn't seem to fly very much she tends to climb around the cage rather than fly so I thought it would be easier for her if it was on the floor of the cage
November 17, 200618 yr If she isn't acting normally then a vet check up would be a worthwhile to make sure she isn't ill and okay to use as a breeding hen later.
November 17, 200618 yr try and leave a two inch gap under the box then the chicks have some where to hide when they leave the box
November 18, 200618 yr Author Thanks, Nerwen she is perfectly normal and fine apart from the flying she just doesn't seem confident with it, she will fly if I put my arm in the cage she will fly a little, or if her veggies are on the floor she will flutter of the perch down to the vegies, she is about 8 1/2 months old now, so other than the flying she is fine
