This is the size-

Length- 24"

Width- 24"

Height- 41 1/2"

How many birds would you put in there?? I just wanted peoples opinions.

:D No more than 2 :hap:

Are you serious pheobe???:hap:

I have 6 in one 32" long, 21" wide, and 36" tall..they have more than enough room...However yours is square which is one of the worst shapes :D So, for that reason, id say 4 or 5...As they will go to the top of the cagee mostly..and more than 4-5 will be to crammed... Got any pics of it?

Kirby :D

:D okay, 3 then, I like to give them a lot of room as I am away all day. Guess I could have gotten that other rescue tiel I wanted if I sized everybody down but they are happy, happy as they are :hap:

Hi not commenting on the number of budgies but the cage really isn't the best for Budgies. It is a square silo. 2 foot x 2 foot x 31/2 foot. It is always best to get a long cage than a high cage.

I'm sure you are right about the shape of the cage, but it can be solved. My birds love their cage and use it from top to bottom. You just have to arrange it so that they are attracted to the mid and bottom levels. I hang swings at different levels and then hang toys from both sides of the lower ones. I also use wooden clothes pins to attatch treats to the lower half. There are perches down low too and toys for the floor of the cage. I put their fresh foods in different places on different levels every day. Making it different all the time keeps them stimulated and they have to work at getting some of their food. I really think the only limitation is imagination. My cage is a little bigger than the one being talked about in this post and I have all six of my budgies in it with plenty of room. You just have to get creative and make the whole cage fun and always changing.

It's actually not really a bird cage, it's a ferret cage that I am going to make the bar spacing smaller on. It's a cage I had for a while and I am reorganizing and moving stuff around my room and so I was just thinking about putting my budgies in it.

They might have a lot of fun in there.

wHAT'S THE BAR SPACING THOUGH? (sorry, caps) It looks way too big. Max for budgies is 1/2"

I personally wouldn't use that cage because of the bar spacing. I saw that you said you would make it smaller but how?

As for the size it is very narrow and I would have thought the same thing Pheobe did - so you where not that off when I saw 24". Budgies don't fly up and down then fly across and in the end they almost always use the top and not the bottom of the cages no matter how many toys you have down there. (some are different though as Shell explained).

But mine use the top almost exclusively. But then every's birds are different.

:) My first budgie cage was a disaster, it was tall and narrow and I only had it for a few months until somebody told me that budgies aren't helicopters so I bought a proper one. :)

(And it's been bugging me all day, can't remember who told me that budgies aren't helicopters) Bea has a very good point about the bar spacing, if you have an overactive budgie (and I have had a couple of really hyper ones in my lifetime), they could get their heads stuck so safety is another issue you should consider.

Okay, so I have just figured out that the cage comes apart pretty easily. So I am going to redo the cage so that it is the other way around. It would be-

Height- 24"

Length- 24"

Width- 41 1/2"

Would that be better?? And how many budgies could I fit in there??

Also, I am going to make the bar spacing smaller by adding extra wire.

the width is pretty short see it would be better if it was longer and shorter :) I know it is frustrating (Laughing out loud).

But in a cage like that I would say no more then 4 because they don't have the width to fly as much mostly up and down. That is just my opinion.

Lovey- Even if I redo it like I was talking about in the post above yours?? Only four or five if it is 3 1/2 feet wide?? Somebody told me 4 or 5 if I left it tall??

No matter whether you keep the cage tall, or make it long, the amount of interior space will not change. To keep the birds happy, I would put no more than 4 in it. Especially if they are all hens. Then they will really need all that personal space. Be careful when adding extra wiring...quite a bit will contain toxic elements you do not want your birds to ingest, like lead and zinc. How will you hide the edges of the wiring where you attach it to the cage so there are no sharp points?

You know, after measuring the dimention out and comparing it to my current cage that my pairs live in, I would say that I would be happy with 6 in there, probably no more though... may be 7-8 if I know that they'll get lots of flying time.. by that I mean like at least four hours of out time.

Mind you all my budgies when I let them out, they do like four circles around the room then just sits on top of the curtain railing for the next four hours!!! (Laughing out loud)... until I go to get them again, thats when they like doing laps around the room again! (Laughing out loud)

Though I agree with more wiring. most mesh out there are zinc coated, so to savely do it, you'll either need to powder coat it, and even then if the birds chew through the powder coated bits, you'll get zinc on the wiring, the safest way to do it would be using stainless steels wiring, and they are so very expensive!!!

Good luck.

Hi,

I would have said up to 6 budgies too. I am assuming that you will lose 1/2 foot in length as well as you would be taking the base off.

Have fun converting it - and as rainbow and cheeta mentioned, watch out for heavy metals.

Feathers

Galvanized wire contains zinc. I would not use it. I think there is some way to remove the zinc, but I don't remember where I saw it. I think it sounded more trouble than it was worth.

:ausb: The wire would be my concern as well, don't think rewiring the cage would be all that esthetically pleasing, as Rainbow said, just start out new and leave the old cage for it's original purpose. :dbb1:

I agree a safer cage and a little money spent is much safer then cheap and half you know what. (not trying to be mean :) just telling the truth)
