Posted November 15, 200618 yr I have a question, today in Canberra it's *lots of bad words* cold. To be precise it's about 12C down from more like 30C lately. It's cloudy, windy and rainy and i'm worried that this stupid and SUDDEN drop in temperature will have a bad effect on my aviary budgies. I know that budgies can cope with low temps but not sudden changes. I've just gone out and pulled the plastic flaps down and pegged them shut to hopefully keep out as much wind and rain as possible but is there anything else i should be doing. I don't have heating or anything for the aviary because this doesn't usually happen, (Laughing out loud)!
November 15, 200618 yr I argee Bea, the weather has been foul!!! Here in South Oz we have had gale force winds and it has been 14 degrees!! Last night I had to try and cover up my birds and I have only just taken one cage out of the shed as I didn't have a protected area to put it in. The wind has now just started to drop out and it is meant to warm up towards the weekend Hopefully it shouldn't affect our birds to much.
November 15, 200618 yr Last week it was in the 30's, today we actually had snow I'm not sure how it will affect your budgies, but I think you have done all you can to protect them
November 15, 200618 yr Author It snowed here too a little while ago! Snow in NOVEMBER!!!! Who would've believed it.
November 15, 200618 yr It SNOWED today in North NSW!! (okay comment before was incorrect, the gold coast had a storm but not the snow :(Laughing out loud) This is really odd weather. Bea if you don't have a heater and are still worried all I can think of doing extra is another layer over some of the sides ( the wind direction one) for extra heat. November 15, 200618 yr I use cane roller blinds on my aviaries when its cold and windy. They attach at the top and I just drop them down when the weather is horrible or at night.....and it keeps snug and warm. I picked up all my cane roller blinds from people's bulk refuse throw outs.

I picked up all my cane roller blinds from people's bulk refuse throw outs. My problem with the weather here on the Northern beaches of Sydney is the heat. The aviary is metal with no shade. On very hot days I go out with the hose and spray the roof and also the budgies. They really enjoy it. I can't get them to take a bath. Once when it was 43 degrees I brought them all into the house in 2 cages for the day. But now I have over 30 birds that is impossible. Any ideas?

I have one metal aviary located where there is no shade but I have put a cheap annexe type canopy ( shadehouse type of thing ) over it and it helps a lot. I can post photos tomorrow if you like.
November 15, 200618 yr Hope all is okay and here in the northern states in the US snow in November already happened on this side of the world
November 15, 200618 yr :hap: Hope they are okay Bea, we are having record rainfall here and a Tsunami alert!
November 16, 200618 yr How are your birds coping Bea. Apparently last night was our coldest November night for a century. Cindy
November 16, 200618 yr Hope all is okay and here in the northern states in the US snow in November already happened on this side of the world Very funny But how often do you get snow in spring time (almost summer?) NOW it has snowed in Queensland! (just over the border) The last time for weather like this was about 65 years ago. A strong wind kicked in overnight here and continued all day, and now it's super cold almost the same as it was in winter! Last night I had a fan on so I could sleep it was that hot!
