one of my birds is really ill and my brother and his partners are outta town for 2 more days, theres only 1 other avian vet in area and she doesnt work till wednesday(currently mon nite)

this is her storey:

i happen to look over my shoulder and saw that "blues" vent was really swollen and there was some bird waste stuck to her feathers, on the bottom of the aviary there is 1 egg so i thought maybe she was eggbound/binding, but once i got her out and had her in my hands she let ago almost like she was constipated, i gave her a warm bath cleaned the area and put her in a spare cage away from the others, then last nite i had noticed her cage was still pretty clean no bird poop in sight and after being in there 7 hours there should be some so went to get her and she let loose again, were not talking a wee bit each time it was mass amounts of runny poo.

what can i do to help her until someone can look at her, she acts normal flys, eats chirps perches all normally although where her tail feathers eat her body there appears to be a lump, cancer? fatty tumor?

can i give her anything to help her "constipation" problem?

:) Sorry can't help Candace, are you able to contact your brother by phone?

Sounds like she has laid an egg and perhapse another one is on it's way. When hens are laying eggs their Droppings are huge and wet. This is normal.

I should get a photo of my bird's.. :)

Does she have a mate?

Daz i'm not sure if she has a mated shes really not bonded with anyone but my one cock hutch is a bit of a ladies man and has been hoppingfrom hen to hen so its posible that he was with her.

You say you found an egg. Is it hers or another hens?

Hen also don't need a mate to lay eggs. Have you ever seen a hen that is laying?

It might be a good thing to get her checked out.

What does she do in the cage? sitting in one spot or act normaly and fly around with the others?

If she is laying with no real nest site she may be seeing the whole cage as her nest and so not wanting to mess it up. When they are nesting they hold on and only come out to do their business.

Have you got an appointment time with the vet? can your borther/family or even a friend take you? It does sound like nesting/laying behaviour but a check up would not go astray.

When she does go, what does it look like? It is a huge runny, liquid mess like diarrhea or is it like a normal poop only much, much larger? Is it easy for her to go, or does she seem to strain? If she can go, it does not sound like she is eggbound, as I think that stops them up so nothing can pass. Breeding hens will only go to the bathroom a few times a day instead of the every 15 or 20 minutes like normal. Hens lay eggs every other day, and when they are laying the area around the vent will look a little swollen. The thing you will notice most though if she is laying eggs is that the vent area will look purplish, like she is bruised. Can you give us any more details? In the meantime, I would keep an eye out on her, try to keep her warm. Watch for signs of illness, like fluffed up feathers, "sad" looking eyes (no spark), not eating or drinking, not moving, or obvious distress (trying to pass something but nothing comes out).

i honestly have no idea whose egg it is it was layed in the middle of the nite nobody has gone near it since.

it seems that its pretty easy for her to go but it only seems that she let go if she gets scared...ie i put my hand in her cage she'll let go and it goes everywhere, but its not runny like water just loose and very large comparable to one of one tiels, her vent is not purple though like shes laying, its big and red until she does let loose and then its back to normal.

Nerwen, my brother is my avian vet and he'll be home wednesday same day as other vet is back, hence the reason i'm asking what i can do until one of them can see her.

she is currently sitting on her perch quietly but appears to be doing a lot of tail bobbing is this a sign of stress of somesort i dont see my other budgies doing it.

Please do not wait till wednesday, get your bird to the first available (preferably avian vet) asap. I do not like the sound of this, and a bird can go downhill very fast.

how are things going Candance and can you also update your post about the tiel last week?

well i took blue to the vets mind you it was avian but i figure a vet is a vet at this point, lets just say it was a waste of money. still no clue whats going on with blue, her cage is still clean after 24 hours and her vent area is filthy, i just clean her up with warm water a very lightly pressing on the area around her vent and once again she completely let loose and the pile is huge. i took it with me to the vets they are going to do tests, but still completely clueless, i dont think she laying eggs, do birds have allergies? could it be i switched seeds and pellets? man i;m grasping straws here.

:P When does your brother get back? :P

she could have a bacterial infection that would be my thought more then allergic to seeds. Glad they are testing the poo to see if there is any infection going on.
