Posted November 12, 200618 yr One of the big penalty to Spangles on the show bench is the lack of markings. Here is a Spangle Opaline greygreen hen (nestfeather) As you can see the Wing markings are faint. Even for an Opaline. This pairing was from Opaline Cock to Spangle Hen. This is another from the same clutch with better wing markings. I paired these two togeather to enhanse the Marks, Size and to try to bring back the throat spots. Many breeders surgest Spangle to Normal but others now are saying Spangle to Spangle. Yes there is the resk of producing Double Factor Spangles but this is not allways the case. These two are from Spangle Greygreen pairing. Spangle grey and Spangle light green. Are you can see the wing markings are better but still not great. Edited November 12, 200618 yr by daz
November 12, 200618 yr do you have a picture of a well marked spangle that the judge would consider excellent? Also when the molt do the spangle marking molt out too? I think I remember hommer posting a picture of a darkly traced spangle and mentioning that he hopes it stays like that. What does nest feather mean?
November 13, 200618 yr i would have to go with pairing to normals only and keeping away from opalines and cinnomons which affect the wing patterns making them less distinct
November 13, 200618 yr Author I was reading that Jo Mannes pairs to cinnamon to get better fether quality. A better down. Both of these birds are from the pairing of Spangle to Opaline. The chick size is larger. The one on the left is Spangle Opaline. The one on the right is Opaline.
November 13, 200618 yr I was reading that Jo Mannes pairs to cinnamon to get better fether quality. A better down thats whats great about show budgies daz what do you do go for feather quality or markings you need both as for size when spangles came on the scene thay were naturaly large birds that is why it is thought they only took three years to get to show standard i personaly would always pair to normal but would consider a normal from a cinnamon parent this would normally be a hen so it doesnt carry the cinnomen gene and muddy the wing markings or a normal cock from a normal/cinnamon cock x normal hen as long as this cock bird has had a few rounds so i could be sure its just a normal and not split
November 14, 200618 yr Author Thanks Hath, Can I throw into that the fertility that comes from Spangles. Hath have you tried Spangle to Spangle? Edited November 14, 200618 yr by daz
November 14, 200618 yr no daz i have never paired spangle to spangle the gentlman i learned a lot from all those years ago showed me two different lines that had started from the same six birds and the spangles from one side had been paired sp x sp and were not as good as the other line wich were never paired sp x sp these lines had been going for about 12 years so it might just been one of those things and the outcrosses were better for the second line than the first but it allways stuck with me as for fertility i have always found them very fertile (apart from the df spangle cock i have now who thinks its a female)
November 14, 200618 yr Author Talking to a judge and brreder of spangles he surgested Sp x normal. He said you could pair sp x sp but it is best with normal. I am out to fine two hens, normal with very good wing markings.
November 14, 200618 yr good luck in finding them i have just paired my best cock (grey normal) to a sp hen today although i have a feeling it might just be a tad to early for her for breeding condition
November 14, 200618 yr Author I tried one the members but I think he is holding them for himself. It will be hard and costly to find some, but i'll ask at the next meeting.
January 4, 200718 yr Hi guys, I was just looking at all the postings and lovey said in one of them "the spangle opaline's feathers are gorgous" and i was wondering what you thought of my sky blue spangle opaline. Thanks :dbb1: Edited January 4, 200718 yr by jjg
March 31, 200718 yr I’m interested in breeding normal spangles with good wing markings, but I love what you get when the opaline gene is introduced into the spangles. I think it’s best to keep the two different colours separate, have some good opaline spangles & good normal spangles. I don’t know if there are classes for opaline spangles at the shows, but I love the breeding potential mixed with the spangle, of beautiful birds. With the opaline spangle I wouldn't worry if the spangle marking was bred out of the wings, as I like the look of a more or less completely blue or green bird. But if the spangle marking were removed completely maybe they wouldn't be called spangles??? Edited March 31, 200718 yr by Norm
April 30, 200718 yr I breed spangles and quite nice ones too, I have had no trouble with my markings except for the throat spots which I am working on I put spangle to normal, then I will put spangle to spangle to keep the line strong and I was told to put a spangle to a normal but out of a spangle and that works well too. If you breed spangle to spangle all the time you adventurely wash out there colour then you need to put them back with a good normal to bring the colour and markings back. So you are better off putting spangle to normal. Normal also means you can add opaline and cinnamon, the breeder I buy my birds off is A champ breeder plus judge and he uses cinnamon and opaline a lot. Well I hope I was able to help!!!
April 30, 200718 yr Author Very good information, Thank you. I am currently breeding two pairs spangles to normals. I am also going to breed a spangle/opaline cock to a Spangle opaline hen. The out come should be Opaline Cocks, Normal/opaline Cocks, Opaline Hens and Normal Hens. For the normal Hens and Cocks I should get 50% Spangle and 50% Normals. The Opaline Cocks and Hens will be Culled. I will keep the best spangles and normals for the next pairing. Edited April 30, 200718 yr by Daz
May 3, 200718 yr Daz from the mateing Spangle/Opline X Opline Spangle. You can get. 12% Opline Spangle DF 25% Opline Spangle SF 12% Opline 12% Spangle DF 25% Spangle SF 12% normal. That is if you know cock bird is Spangle/Opline.
May 3, 200718 yr Author Thanks Macka. The cock was an Opaline light green and the hen was a grey green spangle. Out come was hens as Opalines and Spangles Opalines with cocks being Spangles (Assumed split opaline) 2nd Pairing was (I thought) Spangle to Spangle but found the out come to be Hens Spangles and Spangle opalines and Opalines.. Cocks Normals and Spangles. I was going to Pair one of the Cocks from the 1 st pairing to a Spangle Opaline from the 2nd pairing in hope to achieve Hens in Normals and Spangle.
May 13, 200718 yr i found this website about double factor spangles... http://www.bestofbreeds.net/al-nasser/article19.htm It says this: "I have always liked the DFS and many of our spangle pairings are to produce the DFS. I have found that using DFS enhance the SF spangle wing markings, something that we seem to have lost with our spangles" If you go on the link, it says that pretty much in the middle or end.. DO you think thats true?
May 13, 200718 yr Author Ghalib Al-Nasser is very much the expert on Spangles. I have artiles from him and also Jeff Attwood. I have a DVD by Jeff Attwood when he was at our nationals last year and he talks on the improvement of the spangles.
