Posted November 11, 200618 yr Sorry, I really don't know where to post this. In review, my rescue Coco started laying eggs (as memory serves me) back in May and I finally got her a Luprin injection which didn't last very long at all. She continued to lay eggs for too long a period in the summer, got her another injection, she stopped when I moved for a bit, then started again. She is housed by herself and is let out at different times than the other budgies and it looked like Comet and her were mating through the cage bars on a few occasions. She never cared about the eggs she laid, either ate them or played with them or totally ignored them. The only indication of nesting behaviour would be that she chewed up papers. However, since the egg laying has stopped, she has started hanging upside down for HOURS at a time, chewing up cage paper but mostly HIDING under it, having HUGE poops and when I let her out, not staying out of the cage for long. I checked her out last night and she does not have an egg so she isn't egg bound but all of a sudden she is doing strange things. She has always been very active and destroyed/rearranged her cage contents but is behaving herself and otherwise is feeding well and looks great. Any insight?
November 12, 200618 yr :ausb: Coco is being so weird, she spends so much time hanging upside down from her cage or hidden under the cage papers. Her perineum was bulging tonight so I felt for an egg (empty) but then she had a huge poop, enjoyed her time out of cage and went back in earlier then usual. I don't understand it at all. Still eating, drinking, and grooming herself but seems preoccupied with hanging upside down or chewing stuff and then getting under the cage papers. And she isn't wrecking her cage anymore.
November 12, 200618 yr is she kinda 'nesting' under the paper? and so doing the large poops becuase she is going regularly, only when she isn't under the paper. Have you thought of rearrangeing the cage again?
November 12, 200618 yr Yes, I think she is kind of "nesting" which is weird because when she actually laid eggs she wasn't doing any of those things, she would even lay an egg on the play center and carry on playing. She must have slept upside down hanging from the cage bars last night because that is where she was when I uncovered her this morning. Thanks, will rearrange the cage again, my birds are strange!
November 12, 200618 yr That is very odd, it's like she's trying to nest out of habit rather than because of hormones. Then again, hormones (especially artificial ones) will do strange things to anyone, including a budgie! I hope she goes back to being her old self (minus all the egg laying) soon. Maybe you could talk to your vet about all this? Edited November 12, 200618 yr by eterri
November 12, 200618 yr Yes, I should probably give her a call. Other than this strange behaviour, Coco looks great and is eating well.
November 12, 200618 yr if she is just being weird without laying i have a great big happy dance for you
November 12, 200618 yr :ausb: Yes, I am weary of all the laid in my house (different houses) over the last year and a half, have provided no nest boxes or stimuli to encourage them to lay eggs. (although it was pointed out that I am guilty of feeding them too well).
November 12, 200618 yr And who knows, maybe this IS the real Coco and you just never saw it before because of all the egg laying. :(Laughing out loud):
November 24, 200618 yr Well Coco sort of snapped out of that weird behaviour for the most part so I didn't call the vet and she started acting pretty "normal". Today I get home, she has laid an egg but instead of eating/ignoring/playing with it, she is plastered all over it on the floor of the cage! I changed the cage arrangement, changed the toys, don't know what to do. Comet is out and hanging all over her cage trying to entice her to come up from the bottom of the cage but it's no go. She almost took my finger off (she is normally not a biter) so I am going to have to think on this one, it's always something with my birds. Edited November 24, 200618 yr by Phoebe
December 25, 200618 yr :ausb: After a month of Coco laying on 5 nonfertile eggs (whose contents have now turned to concrete, guess she baked them), I threw them away. She has been totally committed to those eggs and has not been taking proper care of herself so I decided it was time to take them away as it would appear she would lay on them forever. She is totally enjoying herself, visiting everybody (she wouldn't even come out of the cage before), has had a bath and now is ravaging one of the lovebirds cages (they are both are me as I type and have not realized the situation). Hope Coco will call it quits for a bit, forever would be good! :glare: Edited December 25, 200618 yr by Phoebe
December 26, 200618 yr I hope she is finished too, Phoebe, as much for your sanity as anything else :glare:
December 26, 200618 yr :glare: Thanks Feathers and Lovey, it would appear she is enjoying her day free of egg sitting so I hope she remembers that it is much more fun this way! :ausb:
December 30, 200618 yr :budgiedance: The fingers crossing didn't work unfortunately. She laid a new one today. I have rearranged her cage and unless I put her in a cooler, dark bedroom, she will not stop, it's happening again. Will wait until she lays what she wants to and take her in for Luprin injections again.
December 30, 200618 yr I bet Cocos doing it on purpose! You know just to get on your last nerve and see what happens when it snaps!
December 30, 200618 yr You poor thing. I think my last nerve would have snapped by now. I am sending warm -non eggy- thoughts to you both. Shell
December 30, 200618 yr She's ignoring it this time, not even sitting on it and slept on her swing last night, they like to keep me guessing, After this post, as I was leaving the house, she started to sit on it. I returned 6 hours later and she had eaten it! Obviously she is regressing but it looks like she has an egg bum again. Edited December 31, 200618 yr by Phoebe
December 31, 200618 yr it could be worse, a friend of mine who had a budgie called Sarah, had the same problem though it was a bit diferent. instead of the mother ignoring/playing with/eating the egg, her hubbie hached them for her. His name was Matt and he was always with Sarah. eventually my poor friend couldnt sell any of the babys cause every one had to much allready. When she finally snaped she, regetibaly, took Matt to a vet to have his speachal 'part' removed!!! Edited December 31, 200618 yr by bugie-girl
