Two hens, both are recessive pieds, one is a cobalt.

Thanks Daz. I had no idea what they were, I just love their colouring. Now I can search for some mates for them. :ausb:

I would stay with the recessives. :ausb:

The first is a dominant pied. The eye has a ring in it.

As to the gender...well I'm not sure both seem to have a mix of both blue and brown. For the the blue looks too dark for it to match a hen out of condition and males shouldn't have any brown full stop.

I would cosider getting them both seen by an avain vet.

I agree with Nerwen....the sex of these is a bit ambiguous due to both colours present on the cere. I couldn't say for certain male or female :P

Why do they have both colours (blue and brown)? That makes it very hard to pair them up for breeding!! :P

Trust me to buy "problem" birds :P Any one else had this happen??

If they are hens, then there really isn't an issue they would either be coming out or in to breeding condition. But with males it can he hormone inbalance or worse - cancer!

This is why I stated a vet trip might be a safe plan. If you got them from a pet store they normaly have a 'healthy' animal gap that mean you can recover money from health issues not caused by something you did ( ie broken wing from moving from box to cage)

I feel bad bringing that up but some are able to return ill animals, but they are still so cute I would end up just caring for them :P

I believe I've seen other birds with cere like this on this site, none of late so it does happen to others :D

The ceres are crusty, I would say they are coming into condition.

If you look closer both appear to have irus rings but have recessive pied head markings with the banding behind the eyes. :P

Can we have more photos please :D

The top one I would say double factor dominant pied as Nerwen because I see the iris ring but if you look to there is a little bit of coloring by the neck and not hardly any between the legs like most recessives. From little I can see of the wing marking doesn't look like she has much either.

The second one not sure either could be dominant too, not knowing how old maybe the iris ring has not appeared or it is light. Do the eyes seems plum in color? I say this because of the way he is marked and if that is a male with the blue nostrils coming in that would also denote double factor.

As for the ceres and sexes, I am with Nerwen I personally haven't seen ceres like that before too.

My Quake boy has a cere that looks like the first picture. I first thought that he was a she, but turns out that he's a he, and he has been seen by someone, and apparently there's nothing wrong with him. he's cere is pink and blue... almost like half of the cere are coloured like a male recessive, but the other half coloured up like a dom pied. I Think my Spirit cere is colouring up like that too... funny thing is they are my only two dominant pied boys and both have the same problem with the cere being 'not blue'.... they are boys coz I know they've done the boy thing when breeding.

Here's a picture of Quake's cere

Jenene, are your two new birds' ceres crusty brown? or just pinkish like my Quake's??

Daz,

I don't want to seem stupid, but I need to know. Everyone is talking about dominant or recessive pied, but I thought that yellow faced birds with blue on the belly were supposed to be YFII as well. I thought that was the only way to get blue on a yellow bird ( or yellow on the blue bird) What am I missing? What did I not learn right?

Thanks :P

Shell

hey,

i'd say that they are both female, ive had that happen to me and the hens start off looking normal and then seem to get bored and change its quite confusing but these look like hens that are confused

cya!

Sco-tie

Two hens, both are recessive pieds, one is a cobalt.

I am confused... How can one be cobalt when it is all yellow?

Shell

Cobalt is the coloration of the blue and the yellow is from the yellowface gene
