Posted November 8, 200618 yr Hi I have a budgie that can't fly because he had pulpitis when he was little never got his flight feather's (there is a post in another section about it) the question I am asking is we have been doing some bonding sessions and we are gettin to know each other rather well, he will step up last night even climbed up to my shoulder and was playing with my hair, anyway he can't fly at all he kinda just drops he has no lift, we have been doing these sessions over pillows and blankets so he doesn't hurt himself however sometimes he still jumps of my finger and try's to fly luckily he has always landed on a pillow or blanket, but what I am worried about is when we get a little more bonded if he is sitting on my shoulder and tries to fly away and there are no pillow's or blankets he might hurt himself, does anyone think that he will one day realise he can't fly and stop trying so I don't have to remain so worried or will he probably always try??
November 8, 200618 yr he may never be able to fly and like a clipped bird he will realize that he can't go far very soon.
November 9, 200618 yr Author The problem is for instance, last night he didn't want to get of my finger so I had to walk back to the cage with him on my finger I tried to stay as low to the ground as possible so that if he did take off he wouldn't hurt himself, he didn't try to fly away till he saw his cage, once he saw that he leaped of my finger landed on the seat part of a chair (luckily padded) but he didn't land properly and kinda rolled and ended up on the floor (carpet) he didn't hurt himself but it scares the **** out of me, its like he has no control when he tries to fly he has much less ability to fly than a clipped bird. I guess it just doesn't feel like he is getting that he can't fly. Maybe he will realise he can't fly eventually I guess time will tell. thanks lovey
November 9, 200618 yr I am assuming that if he has a certain amount of wing feathers but no flight feathers then he can possibly glide a little to buffer his "fall" ? Considering I have baby budgies fledging from 8 feet up in the air in the aviary at which point they have no flight training as such from nest to ground, then maybe your boy should be okay. Obvious dangers would be...no escape method from cats or dogs if there are any around.
November 9, 200618 yr Author Bubbles, it doesn't really look like he can glide at all, or maybe he doesn't realise it he is so busy flapping his wings trying to fly up high that he kinda just drops. he took a leap of my bed last night aswell (which isn't very high) but he didn't land right next to it he made a little bit of distance (maybe a foot) from the bed but I think that was more because he jumped not because he glided. I don't have to worry about cats or dogs because I don't have any there are some in the neighbourhood but I don't take him out the cage outside. I guess what I am most worried about is him sitting on my shoulder while I was standing and him tryin to take off and hurting himself?
November 28, 200618 yr I have a budgie that cannot fly. He comes out and walks around his cage and when he is on the floor. When it is time for him to go back to his cage or when he shows he wants to go back I put his cage on the floor he will then climb up the bars and back into the cage.
November 29, 200618 yr Monty has never flown and my avian vet cannot figure out why, I am always hauling him off the floor, like people, they have their problems. :ausb:
November 29, 200618 yr Author He is doing really well lovey :offtopic:, I have finally made some progress with his little friend (the girl with him dora) so they both come out the cage for a walk around the lounge room every night, they both can't fly and I think they know it because they are still rather jumpy even in the cage, i'm guessin there that jumpy because they have to be more aware of predator's than a bird that can fly, thats what I think anyway don't know if they actually think like that. anyway yeah they are doing really well, they look so cute walking around my lounge room together where one goes the other follow's, boots ( the boy ) he steps up better than dora but as soon as he does she is rather happy to do it aswell. they still occassionally try to fly of my hands if something startles them but usually I don't have them to high of the ground so they don't get hurt there great I love em to peices, oh and winter and stormy hehe
