Posted November 8, 200618 yr About 2 weeks ago we decided to get petey bird a friend. so we bought another budgie, my daughter named him blue jay. He was very skittish and very afraid of us for the past 2 weeks. Then this morning while i was changing his food and he hoped on my hand for the first time ever. So I brought him out and seen that he had a very dirty bottom. I called the nearest avian vet which is 2hrs away and he said to bring him in tomorrow morning. When i checked on him about 2hrs latter he was fluffed up and sitting on the floor so i started freaking out so i took him out and wrapped him in a towel and he looked so helpless, i knew he wasn't going to make it so i phoned a vet that i know deals with birds that was only 45mins away. So we rushed out there and we were about 10mins from the vet he started rolling and stiffening right out and then he was gone. It is so strange how this morning how he was so friendly and was trying to preen our hair. He showed no other signs other then the strange friendliness and the poopy bottom. I look back now and it almost seems like he was trying to tell us something. I phoned the avian vet back and he said to keep an eye out on Petey even though the other bird was in quarentine. I feel so horrible I should have found a way to bring him to the avian vets this morning when i first noticed his poopy bum. It just hasn't been a good week, yesturday we got x-rays done on Moose's hips and found out that he has severe hip displesia. Animals sure do have a way with masking there pain. The only signs Moose showed was slight stiffness in the mornings, never did we think it was as bad as it is. Sorry about the length in this post. Melanie
November 8, 200618 yr :ausb: So sorry to hear about blue jay, budgies are so fragile sometimes. Is Moose a German Shepherd? Sorry to hear about his problems as well, sounds like you have had a VERY bad day, my thoughts are with you.
November 8, 200618 yr :ausb: Is Moose a German Shepherd? No Moose is our soon to be 2 yr old Saint Bernard. Yeah it has been quite a week.
November 8, 200618 yr I really don't want to worry you, but did you have this bird in quarrentine or for the last two weeks was it with your other bird? Your new bird may have infected Petey Bird. Some deseases take up to 30 or 40 days to show. Yhat is why we surgest that the new bird is quarentined in a different room for at least 35 days. I would have the dead bird examined to find out why it died and als get Petey bird checked or you could lose him as well. You can read up why by clicking the links in my signature. Sorry. November 8, 200618 yr ((hugs)) on both counts My cousin has 2 St. Bernards and the one when it was 2 had to have 2 knee cap surgeries 7000 US but they did it now the other one needs the same thing It is amazing what we will do for our pets when we love them. I hope Moose is okay he is gorgeous.
November 8, 200618 yr The birds were in different rooms and on different levels of the house. He just said to keep an eye on Petey just in case we weren't as carefull as we thought keeping the germs in one area. Moose will likely need hip replacement surgery on both hips eventually. My husband is making a new frame for our bed so it is as low to the floor as he can make it. This is the man who never liked Moose on our bed. We love our animals as childern and will do anything to keep Moose happy and pain free.
November 8, 200618 yr men have a secret compartment in their heart they don't tell us about until the animal really needs us hats off to your hubby. Mine said the same thing about our cat who he swears is a pain.
