To Clip Or Not To Clip Wings?

hi all i was wondering for thoughs of you that have indoor budgies do you clip their wings if so why or why not? the place that i am giong to get my budgie gives you the option and i dont know what to do thanks for any advice you might have :)

Both of my birds were clipped when I purchased them since then they are fully flighted and I intend to keep them that way. I am pro-choice everyone has different circumstances so this will make for a great topic here for you :(.

:ausb: Actually this is a VERY frequent topic so you can look back over previous posts and see what everybody says. As for me, my tame birds are clipped and my untame ones aren't, works for me. :(

right now all my budgies are not clipped but when l first got them they where already clipped .

l'm debating right now because last week l lost my Mango because while they where free flying she smacked right into the wall .

lm thinking tho l might just let them be (fully flighted) because they really do seem to enjoy flying around so freely , and what happened to Mango was a freak accident .

l agree that everyone has a right to do what they want (clip or not clip) and everyone's situation is different .

I purchased my two birds from different places. The lutino girl? was clipped, the boy was not. When they got to fly around in the room, the boy was very sure of himself, looked happy and proud. The girl nearly killed herself, hitting the furniture and falling onto plants and stuff. She looked miserable! :D

I'll jump right in....:) Putting aside whether you agree or disagree with wing-clipping, three very important questions you need to ask yourself are

1. In your particular situation, which way will they be safer?

2. How well can you control them if they are flighted?

3. How comfortable are you with that particular level of control?

If they cannot be kept safe because you can't handle them or can't keep them from flying away from you and possibly injuring themselves because they are afraid, your question is already answered, isn't it? Because there will be times where you need to have them instantly, either for safety reasons or because you need to leave the house and don't have 3 hours to chase them to get them in the cage. For any unforseeable or unimaginable circumstance you may find them in, just pick one. Budgies are good at getting themselves into situations you NEVER saw coming... It is something some people don't like the sound of, but I believe if you are going to have a bird you keep indoors that bird needs to be obedient to a certain extent. For his health and safety as well as your sanity. For any animal that is brought into your house, you have a certain level of what is acceptable behavior and what is not. For your dog, it may be that he comes when called and doesn't pee all over the carpet. Or it may be that you expect complete obedience training, ribbons, and awards. For your cat, it may be that they don't use your best furniture as a scratching post and know what a litterbox is for. Or maybe you don't care about those things. Everyone is different. I think some level of expectation is a reality for most people. The rightness or wrongness of trimming is secondary, and made an issue only because of how you think about it. Since we are bringing a bird into unnatural surroundings to live, it is our responsibility to ensure their safety as best we can. I have a personal belief about what I think is best for the bird, but on a case by case situation with each bird I have, if that personal belief is in conflict with what is safest in my house, I must put that aside and go with what is best for the bird.

Just something to think about. ****hops off soapbox*****
