November 8, 200618 yr Author Apart from him sitting in the bottom of the cage the only other symptom he has is runny brownish poo.
November 8, 200618 yr Oh dear, CheekyChucky, since you have lost others it sounds like something is going on there, please get Maverick and the rest checked out, good luck to you.
November 8, 200618 yr Hugs and I agree with Pheobe there may be an bacterial infection or something that could be easily treated by the vet if caught early. You are in our thoughts
November 8, 200618 yr It's probably too late for helpful advice and I am really sorry you are having to go through this. To help anyone else in the same situation..... If anyone else has a sick bird, and you need to know what to do before you can get to a vet. Vet is a must, but if you have to wait then try this. You have to catch the problem early as we all know sick birds go downhill very fast. Firstly check if diarrhea is happening. Sulpha remedy or Sulpha D kept with your budgie supplies .....put in their water or given by direct dosage and sometimes both ways ...helps stop the dehydration and loss from diarrhea. This as well as warmth....in an emergency cover a small cage on 3 sides and place a low wattage lamp outside the cage so they can get to the warmth or move away if it gets too hot. Seed and water on the floor of the cage too in shallow dishes......millet sprays also. Something not everyone takes into account is worming of their birds. Young babies will inherit worms from their parents and that can be the cause of many youngsters going downhill not long after they are brought home. They can have inherited coccidosis from the parents also which will suddenly hit with a vengeance. The sulph medicines work for coccidosis. I truly believe urgent diagnosis from a vet is of the utmost importance ....the remedies I have suggested above being for urgent care pre vet visit. Also a thing to remember, is, and most people do....just reinforcing....scrupulous cleaning of the old cage before the new budgie goes in it....just in case there is anything transferable. I am really sorry Cheekychucky about your bird....hoping all is fine and you get vet care soon enough to make a difference. I am hoping to be helpful at the same time for those with similar problems with their birds. I have had much success with the sulpha treatment as it seems to get the bird over the hurdle and back to eating again as fluid loss when they are sick is a major problem.
November 8, 200618 yr Author Thank you bubbles I have printed your advice and I will definately keep it for future reference. Unfortunately Maverick has gone. I felt so helpless. I couldn't get to the vet but I also knew in my heart that it was too late, he was too weak. I tried to give him some water thru a syringe and keep him warm. I have buried him under the new tree with Gloria who left me 2 weeks ago. They were mates so they can fly together and hopefully watch over me and the flock. I have this awesome little video of Mav that I would love averyone to see, but its just too hard yet. I will post it soon. Thanks everyone who sent me their wishes its great so know that you all care. Here is My precious Mav.
November 8, 200618 yr Author I just went outside to check Wednesday (mavs girl) and to my suprise there was an EGG!!! She had just layed it as it was still wet. I am trying not to get excited but its hard not to think that maybe there will be a mav 2. I'm not sure if wednesday can cope on her own. I dont have another mum to put the egg with. I will do all I can but some advice would be great. What a day.
