Adolescent Budgie!

Featured Replies

My greywing male is still rather young. I assume so because his eyes are still very dark with no visible rings. I have tried to place him in my flight cage with my other budgies but none of them like him. He acts just like a know-it-all and chases all the other birds around. They get pretty annoyed. Will I be able to put him in the flight late on as he matures? Right now he is by himself in his own cage. He loves his mirror and seems quite content. I would like to breed him in the future as he is a very striking bird with a pale yellow face. Do you think he'll calm down as he matures? I would like to see if he can pair off with one of the hens!

Thanks,

Eric

I don't know the answer totally to this but here are some factors you may look at on why he is bossy.

1. Budgies are bossy (Laughing out loud)

2. He may be hormonal right now

3. Could be going through a molt

4. Mirrors in cages can cause behavior issues and protective ones (you may want to take it out) - note everyone has their own view but I have read and seen with my own eyes negative behavior with mirrors.

He may never be able to socialize with other budgies but you can look at ways to alter his behavior.

When he is with the other budgies do you put in his mirror? What does he chase them away from? Or is it that he is just chasing them? Is the cage big enough for everyone?

Do they get flight time where they could fly together or be together out of the cage and first to get to know each other.

Thinking out loud hope some of this helps..

Thanks for the timely reply!

He is just chasing each one of them around. It's kind of like he is showing off, but the other three birds don't want any part of it. They actually bite at him. I did take him out. The other budgies are in a large flight cage, however they are older which seems kind of strange to me. You'd think that they would put him in his place. He chases them a lot. They are all in the same room together and his cage is right next to the flight so they do see and hear each other. Maybe I will try to take out his mirror. He is not moulting right now. It's almost like he is hyperactive and can't calm down. I'll try your suggestions to see if anything changes. Even in his own cage, he'll get into the corner and kind of ram himself into the bars and drop down to the cage floor. Very active bird!! Thanks again for your advice!!!

Could you take the cage and put it in the aviary cover the top and all 3 sides so the other birds can't jump on it and get their toes nipped and they can visit him and he can visit them but he is restrained. I think he is excited to see other birds and he is not trying to be mean. I know Pretty was very hyper when I intro Merlin and he kept trying to jump on Merlin's back so I believe he will calm down if he is around them more.
