November 7, 200618 yr Hi the both of you, I hope you have a great time on the forum. Your birds sound great. We would all love to see any photos of them. :hap: Just a quick point, please ask any question you would like. We don't think an question is too silly. But as this is an international forum we try to keep to english with out short cuts, like u and c and 2. Some of our members have enough trouble with english. Have fun and enjoy.
November 7, 200618 yr thankyou daz will keep that in mind. :hap: this site has taught us alot already we love it.thankyou for replying so soon, you made us very happy. One question, when and how do you tell the sex of the chicks because the cere all look the same to us?! .
November 7, 200618 yr I usually call it around 21 days old but some of my chicks are difficult and my take up to 35 days before I can make a positive call. As some know, I have had a couple of b irds even at 12 months old that are difficult. Some out of condition hens look the same as the cocks in Recessive pieds and Inos. At around 3 weeks old the hens will start to develop a nassel ring. A white ring around both nostrals. The cocks will keep to the pink side. Some chicks will get a black beak that blends into the cere. They take a bit longer to call.
November 7, 200618 yr Hello and welcome! Aren't baby budgies so very cute? It is tough to call the sex when they are as young as yours, but in a week you should begin to notice some differences in the shade of the cere and also the shape of it. I love the picture of your little one. If you have more, please post them in the Pictures section. I'd love to see all your birds. Edited November 7, 200618 yr by Rainbow

I'd love to see all your birds. thankyou for all your lovley welcomes! we think our babys are cute to. i,ll be sending more photos of the whole gang just as soon as my husband teaches me how to. And look forward to working out what they all are. I am sure one is a white lacewing. The mother of the chicks has never been able to fly and a week ago we sadly lost the cock :ausb: .Will this become a problem when the chicks fledge? p.s I love looking at all the beautiful photos and am envious of most of them.Hope we can do just as well.
November 8, 200618 yr How sad. I am very sorry for your loss. I know how difficult that can be. Do you know why the hen has never been able to fly? That is unusual. The babies should be okay. Normally the female doesn't feed much after about three weeks and the male takes over, but without him she should still feed them when they beg. It's possible some of the other birds you have may feed them a bit too, once the babies fledge. I don't think baby birds are too picky - if they are hungry they will probably beg food from any bird. :ausb: The older ones will sometimes feed the younger ones while they are still in the nest box too. But if you notice any problems, let us know. You have found the right place. Edited November 8, 200618 yr by Rainbow
