Posted November 2, 200618 yr You would be familar with Lady and Buttons who just raised Jellybean, Pinto, Cashew and Peanut. Lady laid two eggs before the last of her chicks left the nesting box and I addled them, along with the next 7 she laid (9 all up), I have been waiting for her to lose interest in these dud eggs and I looked in the nesting box this morning and there are 3 babies!!!!!!!!!! I was so shocked that I actually went back into the aviary to double check I wasn't seeing things! Now I shook those eggs good (or so I thought!) but obviously not enough! I seriously am in shock, those babes must have meant to be hatched!!!!! Geez!!!!!!
November 2, 200618 yr Well you didn't do a good job. congratulations on the new chicks. I would have taken the eggs from her one a day and thrown them away.
November 2, 200618 yr OMG!! sorry thats kinda funny from an out siders point of view....when its ,meant to be there is little that can be done.....congrats?!
November 2, 200618 yr I believe you need to shake them each day to addle them correctly. I'm sorry they didn't work out for you correctly this time round. I could remove the younger eggs so she doesn't have so many to feed. And this time around as soon as the babies are old enough to be with out the nest box remove it all. Or do as daz said and remove an egg after another has been laid or use fake ones. Some people also boil the egg to stop the chick from growing inside.
November 3, 200618 yr By the time the oldest chicks are feathering up and the nest get poopier and more active, the last eggs generally dont hatch as they get so much poop on them they contaminate. Good luck with it all
November 3, 200618 yr Madly shake them like dice every day (I used to do it a couple of times a day), THAT will addle them, you have my personal guarantee! :hap:
November 3, 200618 yr If only I'd read this a month or so back I only just posted a message about my Paris who got straight back into things while she still had chicks in the nest. At first I just assumed the eggs would be no good (well really, who has time to mate with 4 babies to feed?!) Silly me. (obviously I'm just an amateur who loves her pets). There's one egg left to hatch but its looking pretty crusty so I guessed its no good, but I'd rather Paris chucks it out herself when she's ready - is this wrong?
November 3, 200618 yr Author Now you tell me the secrets to addling! (Laughing out loud)! I only gave them a good shake once, put a dot on the egg so I knew it was done and waited for the next egg to be laid. I have been thinking all day what to do with the remaining 6 eggs. Now some of you may not agree with me (and that's okay!) but I have decided to leave them in the nest. If some hatch that is fine, if I did manage to addle some of them that is o.k too. But I can't just take them away now as, if there are chicks developing they may well be quite advanced and I would feel as if I am killing a bird. I hope you don't think I am an idiot but that is the way I feel. Luckily I have a good sized avairy, so any chicks that I don't find a good home for, can stay with me. And this time the nesting box is evicted as soon as the chicks fledge. No more babies for this pair! :hap:
November 3, 200618 yr It's quite alright to let them have a second round and I understand about the chicks in eggs thing. If they lay before all the chicks are old enough this time just remove them until you can remove the box. Raising them is the hard work not the laying of eggs. At least one good thing has come from this, another in the future can read this for great pointers :(Laughing out loud):
November 3, 200618 yr Author Nerwen thanks! (Laughing out loud)! I certainly hope someone learns from my mistakes! Always good to find the silver lining in any situation! Especially those little unexpected pink ones! :fear And, I am happy now about the babies, it just took awhile for the shock to wear off! :hap: Must admit though, I am still shaking my head at the surprise of it all! :hap:
June 1, 200718 yr I just found this post. It's interesting - do you think there is no way the chick would hatch and be "sickley" from the addling? In case you don't shake it enough? Edited June 1, 200718 yr by Zebra
