Choosing A Keeper!

okay how do you know which one you are going to keep?

I'm trying to decide at the moment as I have 3 very similar girls. They are all light green opaline but have narrowed it down to two (I know everyone will say keep both!!) but how do you narrow it down?

The difference between the two I have is one has lovely head markings-big spots and full cheek patches while the other is slightly taller and holds herself better but the spots haven't come through as much.

So which one?

The three (two back ones in question)

First one with the spots

The other one

But what are you keeping it for? Future Show or to breed or for a pet.

If you are going to keep for Show, you keep them for 3 to 6 months. You can't tell know what they will be. (Ugly duckling story)

As much as I would love to get into the world of show budgies I am 8 hours from the nearest budgie club, actually just wondering what people looked for when choosing one at this age.

My budgies aren't show birds but why not start learning what to look for in a bird now, it can only improve the breed as a whole?

She won't be a pet, more of an aviary bird.

Cheers for that- will have a read through it looks intersting.

My pleasure.

That is just such a great attitude to breeding that one doesn't hear all that much. That goes back to the purpose of breeding *should* be to better a breed, it's often not something people think about. It's really great to hear someone thinking about it. :D

Daz jsut a question but if these ones where being picked to keep for showing, woulding the fact that the second one seems to be blowing already give it some points?

Blowing for others is when they puff their head feathers up and farward, kinda like the males do when flirting.

I like the look of the front one in the first picture.. so I guess I don't have a good eye :P

Yes of course but as I said it's best to keep them until they mature. Many breeders keep them chicks until the end of the breeding season and then cull. (Keep and sell)

A lot of breeders only keep the best. But as we know genetics hids some good traits that can appear in the new generation.

I know a top breeder that keeps his best one and then the 3rd best one in a family. You cull by family not by over all.

Yes I understood about keeping them until older I was just wondering about the blowing.

Interesting idea to keep the 3rd best looking one. I guess it's working for him if he is the top.

Having the young bird show is a big plus.

Some people will by blood, by that I mean that if the bird came from a stud that is well known for producing good birds the bird should be good. So the 3rd best bird shouldn't be over looked. It did come the same parents as the best bird.

It is better to buy an average bird from an outstanding stud than an outstanding bird from an average stud. It prospect is in the genes not always the looks.

Sunday there is bird on raffle at the show. $1 tickets. It is a gazzard bird. The last three gazzard birds I saw at auction all priced over the $3000 a bird. ..... I hope there are some tickets left when I get there. :(
