November 5, 200618 yr How did Bobby make out over the weekend? Thank goodness the vet is open tomorrow.
November 5, 200618 yr Author He's not been too good actually, very sad and looks to be in a bit of pain.. this is how he has been for the whole weekend, and he has a new, bigger better collar now, if this one doesn't do the trick then nothing will This is him gripping onto a perch with his beak, I think he is doing it for balance or comfort, I hope its not biting down to manage the pain... He has been sitting like this all weekend - my heart is broken at the moment, every time I look at him I get tears in my eyes. :dbb1:
November 5, 200618 yr ((((hugs)))) I hope the new collar does the job. Is he going to the vets tomorrow?
November 5, 200618 yr Have you thought of maybe taking out the perches so his feet can stand flat because his toes should be straight out anyways yes? It would help the pain possibly and the tendency to wanting to curl. You can put a soft cloth on the floor but just make sure his toenails don't get stuck.
November 5, 200618 yr You could also put in one flat perch closer to the cage floor for now. (made a couple for my tiel without hardly any toes, just go to a lumber place). Then he would feel he was perching and not on the floor and might be a bit more comfortable.
November 5, 200618 yr Author What a great idea - thank you both so much I will alter his cage now!! I will call the vet as soon as they open and try and get him back in
November 5, 200618 yr Poor Little Bobby. What an ordeal he has been through! I hope that his leg heals quickly so he can get out of his contraptions. What a trooper!
November 6, 200618 yr Author Well it turns out the avian vet doesn't work on Monday's So Bobby has to wait until tomorrow to get his new splint...... At least the normal vet who I spoke to has given me some more pain medication for him, I am going home in my lunch break to give it to him... Oh I took out all perches and just had him on the soft bottom, but his foot was curled under him and it appeared to be putting pressure on his actual leg, not wanting to cause him any more pain I put in a wide rope perch, so it is only slighly curved, but his broken leg wont even go onto the perch, he dangles it beside him either in front or beside the perch... He is still using anything he can to hold on with his beak, he looks so sad - at least I saw him eating today, he only ate once yesterday, late in the afternoon, I was starting to think I would have to hand feed him something if he didn't start eating soon... Do you think I should give him something else to give him some more energy, or leave him be so that he can concerntrate on being still and not aggrevating it too much??? What should I give him if so... Edited November 6, 200618 yr by Riebie
November 6, 200618 yr Poor Bobby having to wait another day, is it time for millet and other treats he likes?
November 6, 200618 yr Author He has constantly got a spray of millet in with him - it wasn't touched yesterday
November 6, 200618 yr Time for a batch of fresh eggfood. Put a fraction of a teaspoon of sugar in it for extra energy boost.
November 6, 200618 yr So you mix eggfood (is that egg & biscuit?) with water and sugar??? A mashed boiled egg with some breadcrumbs, grated carrot, finesliced greens, and some bird seed mixed through. Then a pinch of sugar in it.
November 9, 200618 yr I've been following this anxiously and am wondering too. Riebie and Bobby, we're thinking of you. I wish you the best of luck and hope all is well.
November 10, 200618 yr Author Bobby is getting better :budgiedance: His splint has stayed on untouched since tuesday and he is starting to stand on it again! He is even gripping the perch slightly, so I think this time it should stay in place! The vet said his leg might heal slightly crooked, but it shouldn't affect him too much cause he is such a little bird He is starting to eat more, drink and talk again too!
November 10, 200618 yr :budgiedance: That's great news Reibie! And it doesn't matter if Bobby's leg doesn't heal exactly in proper position, it would be a problem if he were a woodpecker but he's a super budgie so he will adapt just fine. Glad he's doing well.
November 12, 200618 yr Author He is really improving heaps now, he is standing on his foot and gripping onto the perch a bit. I think he will regain full use of his leg again
