October 25, 200618 yr Author i am confused i know the hen suppose to check the nest box once and therefore lay eggs not too long after but my hen constantly sticks her head in the nest box and chirps goes in moves around the little wood shaving in one corner she does that over and over what is she doing and what am i to do Edited October 25, 200618 yr by shaquille
October 25, 200618 yr sounds like normal nesting behaviour to me, I'd expect you should have eggs in a maybe a week. are you sure it's a 'tiel box? they are usually about 10in. x10in. or something like that, if it's 3 feet tall that sounds more like a macaw box!
October 25, 200618 yr I don't think there's any real problem with the box being too big. If you're worried about the chicks leaving the nest, set them up with some ladders when the time gets close (4 or 5 weeks after they hatch). They'll have no problem climbing out when they're ready.

October 26, 200618 yr Cant wait to see picture of this box.. sounds like a LARGE parrots nesting box.. Some people do like to use larger boxes (maybe not that large) as it stops the babies from fledging too early.. If the hen is going into the box, shifting the shavings about or even chewing on the box.. they are all normal behaviours and i suspect you will see some eggs within the next week or two .. If you are happy with them being in the box as it doesn't seem to bother them, id say leave it in there with them and see how it goes for a while.. Actually while i'm thinking about it, they do have room enough to fly about in the aviary still don't they? Cheers  Una
October 26, 200618 yr I have two nest boxes that i'm giving to the RSPCA for possums. 250 x 250 x 250... they were a ooopps. I was in a hurry and grabed an old set of plans that I should have distroyed.
October 26, 200618 yr While your discussing nesting boxes can I ask a question? What is the best material to make or buy a nesting box in. I have seen many MDF boxes in petshops etc. Are they okay or is it poisonious to the budgies if they chew it. What sort of wood shavings are okay to put in the box too? Happy to report I now have 4 babie budgies hatched this week. So excited about them and can't wait to see what they will look like Budgie Baby
