Squawking Budgie

hey guys

ive got a very tame budgie i reared from 1 week old. he's a bit of a talker. recently, he's been up at the crack of dawn swuaking incessantly and it pisses me off on the weekends when i want to sleep in. rather than putting him outside i want to try some behaviour modification. I havent changed any of my own habits recently.

Hi,

Do you cover the cage at night? I have found that my budgies stay pretty quiet in the morning until I uncover them. Just a thought. I am sure the experts will respond with something much more clever! (Laughing out loud)

When your budgie sees the slightest glimpse of morning light, he's going to call out to the world to wake up (especially if he's hearing the birds outside doing this as well). As mentioned, a cover should do the trick. In addition to helping you get more sleep, it will also help your bird get the proper amount of rest that he needs as well. Budgies should get about ten hours of sleep/darkness every night and twelve during hormonal periods.

When choosing a cover, find one that is dark enough to keep out ANY light that may filter through. Some budgies only need the slightest sight of day to go into their calling. Also be very careful to use a material that won't catch his little claws if he decides to crawl along the cage.

Another thing to keep in mind is that it may take a while for your budgie to adjust to the new routine. In time, he will get used to being covered and sleeping during the new times though, just keep at it. It really shouldn't take very long and some budgies adjust right away as it's the light that usually triggers the desire to call. The light tells them it's morning.

Hope this helps and welcome!

I cover mine too. I'm a night owl and he is too, so he tends to stay up pretty late. He's actually the most active at night. It's 12:20 am right now and he's running around his cage playng with his toys and singing (Laughing out loud). He puts himself to bed and I cover him whenever I notice he's ready to go to sleep. He'll usually start moving around again at about 10 am, but he's pretty quiet until I uncover him. I sleep like a rock anyways so I don't usually hear him at all.

The best thing to do is get him on your schedule. Don't cover him until you go to bed. That way his sleep patterns will be closer to yours.

Dark room and cover them up works well- mum would have a coffee in the morning then get my old budgie up, if she was any longer than that he'd spit it and make that angry chattering noise cos we'd forgotten him!

He'd then fly down into my room, sit on my forhead and continue to talk and chew my eyebrows til I woke up

(he'd actually say 'wake up' too!!) If he got too noisy/naughty during the day he got sent back to the dark room and covered too for a bit

well that explains a lot! I used to cover him up religiously, for some reaon i have become slack - naughty joolz. One things for sure though, he joins me for my morning showers, i think he loves the way his own voice sounds bouncing off the tiles! He likes getting under the water especially when he has his pin feathers coming through...will post a picture soon when my digi camera is workin!
