Posted October 23, 200618 yr Hi! After my first, very happy and successful venture into breeding budgies, I have a question. When budgies mate does the sperm stay viable in the females reproductive tract for a few days thus fertilising a few eggs. Or is it one mating results in one fertilised egg? Perhaps someone knows of a web site that gives detailed info on this topic. I have googled this question but not come up with much of an answer!
October 23, 200618 yr I understand that after the first egg is laid budgies mate everyday until the last egg is laid thus fertilizing each egg individually. this is what I understand happens but their are alot of very experienced breeders on this forum so see what the experts have to say. October 23, 200618 yr Not sure about budgies but I know that Major Mitchells can "store" the sperm in the females reproductive tract for up to a month till they are ready to produce an egg.I found this out by talking on a cockatoo forum. I witnessed my pair mating every single morning for a month and laid no eggs. Then all of a sudden she laid 3 eggs. (2 were fertile, 1 not). Just goes to show you learn something every day!!
October 23, 200618 yr Yes Budgies can store sperm but as Nerwen said only for a few days. Some breeders that have mixed aviaries. Place the hen in the breeding cage for a week before introducing the cock to make sure the eggs are his.
