:D Hello Everyone, I haven't been about much lately but do pop my head in when i get the chance (even though i don't post)... Anyways i've had about 10 new little babies in the aviary over the last few months and at the moment there are still six in nesting boxes.. One of my "Army" clutch (they are all green/brown) babies has caught my eye and i'm absolutely in love although i'm not exactly sure on what to call him genetics wise..

(Sorry If there is too many pictures.. i've fallen in love with him :( )

i'm not sure if the photos do him any justice or not but he is kinnda a dirty greeny brown colour with brown wing markings and beautiful little purple cheek spots.

What is he??

Oh here is Mum when she was alot younger..

I'd say "he's" a She, my vote says opaline cinnamon(you said the wing bars are brown), as for the body color I haven't any clue. pretty bird though. :(

:D hehee Dingo, Im one of those people that tends to call most things a He even if it is a She :(Laughing out loud):

To be honest i havent actually looked at "his" cere before, i was more interested in the body colouring to notice :(..

And yeah the markings on his wings are brown, even his body is a dirty green/brown colour :( I soooo want to bring him inside but my hubby thinks i have enough inside with the three other budgies, a honey eater, and a Rainbow Lorikeet.. Oh and in about 4 weeks time ill have a beautiful baby Indian Ringneck inside too :D Im tempted to sneek this lil guy in too though, I dont think he will notice one more budgie :D

Is the daddy related to Apple? He looks very similar! :(

That's what reminded me of Apple!! :(Laughing out loud):

WOW Una I can see why you are in love with her.

Few questions:

eye colour ( they look dark in the picture)

tail colour ( the bit is see looks blue but is that right)

Okay just went out and had another little look at him and his tail is more brown than blue although it does have the faintest tinge of blue (not as dark as it seems in the picture) and i took the little one out into the sun to have a propper look at his eyes, they are so soooo dark but almost appear to be a plum colour like Mig's eyes :(

What are you thinking?

Edit: Hmm Had ANOTHER look and the eyes may infact be dark brown instead hahaaa (maybe i need glasses)

Nerwen are you edging towards a fallow or a clear body??? ^_^

Dad is a spangle and Mum is a recessive pied. but what is Dad and Mum hiding?

gorgeous baby Una! I love the brown it is very different compared to some of the brown markings of I have seen.

Well, by the body colour, brown markings and plum eyes, he/she looks like an Opaline Cinnamon Grey Green to me. :hap:

What do you think Nerwen/Daz?:(

Well by looking at her it reminds me of a Texas Clearbody :( with the marking being cinnanon of course.

I could be wrong…. But I’m not convinced.

A texas clearbody in the green series has a body colour in general described as “mustard yellow”, Una´s bird looks more grey green.

Also on a clearbody, either with black markings or cinnamon markings, the primary wing flights should present a degree of paleness, they should be more greyish when compared to the markings on the rest of the wing. That also isn’t happening in Una’s budgie as it’s primary wing flights are brown and in the same shade as the rest of the markings on the wing.

Daz and Nerwen (or some other expert)… opinions please! :sport:

*Edit: ??So are we going with Opaline Cinnamon Grey Green ?? :( :(Laughing out loud): I actually should take photos of the others in the box also, I think they are just normal spangles but they are also this dirty green colour :rip: Actually is it a dirty green or a dirty yellow?? GOSH im confusing myself

sorry for the wait I was thinking of a grey-green cinnamon, so that is why I asked about the tail. Didn't think of Clearbody before becuase of the wings like Luso said.

I didn't think Opaline was on the board before but the new pictures make me think otherwise.

so Possible Opaline Cinnamon Grey Green.

I'm still not sure since grey is normally a dominant gene (meaning either mum or dad should show it.)

Could he be an olive? He does have a dark blue tail correct vs a black one (like a grey/green).

I agree with the rest Opaline Cinnamon

plus he has blue not silver check patches like a grey/green?

  • Author

Actually his cheek patches are the most beautiful purple colour, it just doesnt show up in the photo :D ..

Thanks everyone, Im glad to know what he is and im still trying to convince my other half to let me bring him inside but he seems to think i have enough in already... :) Pfftt MEN :P

Here we go again… this is the fun part about discussing genetics!

1) About the tail

Could he be an olive? He does have a dark blue tail correct vs a black one (like a grey/green)

I agree with lovey, grey would mean a black tail, and his tail looks blue.

Yes a grey’s tail would be black, if only we where talking about a normal (black markings) and not a cinnamon variety. A grey green cinnamon should have a deep cinnamon brown tail. I thought he could be a grey green cinnamon because of what Una posted about the tail:

“his tail is more brown than blue although it does have the faintest tinge of blue”

Now, looking at the new pics, yes it does look blue rather then brown.

2) About the cheek patches

plus he has blue not silver check patches like a grey/green?

Yes Lovey, you are absolutely right about that, I didn’t pay enough attention to it. He doesn’t have grey cheek patches but violet ones instead.

Based on 1) and 2), no grey green, yes I would agree with Opaline Cinnamon Olive Green.

Can we all agree on this or would someone like to ad another twist to make this even more interesting?!:P

My other half thinks my birds all look the same ("I don't know which bird, it was the blue one", LOL). If yours is like mine, you could bring that little one in and pass her off as one of the ones already in, and he may never know.......LOL. No, honey, she's always looked like that.....

I'm inclined to go with olive as the color too, but something about that mustard-yellow color on the rump has me not 100% with that. Olive should be more green...shouldn't it?

Yes Rainbow, the mustard colour puzzles me too.

But it may just be the natural body colour dilution that comes with cinnamon acting up. The cheek patches, being violet, do not leave much space for grey green, and the markings on the wings leave no space at all for a texas clearbody.

I think we all agree that the colour is mustard and not matching to either Olive or Grey green. I know I have read about mustard in budgies before I'm going to have to hunt out my book again and read through it. I'm sure it's in that where I read it.
