Posted October 22, 200618 yr I am soooo annoyed right now!! Tiki has started vomitting some time since last night, i'm pretty sure it would be the same thing Jelly had about a month ago (trichomoniasis) but the regular vet i go to (who's not avian but he's good with birds) isn't on today. The clinic gave us the number of the vet where Dr Sandy Hume works and she is the only registered avian vet in Canberra, i've never been to her before but i would like to start. Well she's not on today or tomorrow! So now i'm stressing. We rang back the place i normally go to as they said that one of their vets would be happy to look at her but she's not actually an avian vet. As i know the treatment for this has to be given via a crop needle i got mum to ring back to talk to the vet who's on and see if she's able to safely give this treatment and we're waiting for her to call back so we can talk to her. Even better is that dad is overseas so we'll be getting a taxi - and it's a long ride so it'll cost a fortune! On top of that there's a sunday surcharge at the vets so just getting her looked at with no medication will cost $80 which is like $30 more than normal. :ausb: Then there's meds on top of that. And then even if the regular vet i go to is working tomorrow mum is doing a course and we wouldn't be able to go until after 4:30pm....and what if that's too late. I just knew this would happen one time dad was away, if he had of just come straight home from Japan instead of going to Korea we could've gone tomorrow. And i forgot to mention that Tiki is usually ultra fat, she's now the size of a normal budgie so she's lost a lot of weight. I only just took her and Gherkin out of the breeding cage yesterday because she wasn't interested in breeding! I should've realised that that was unusual and taken her to a vet sooner. October 22, 200618 yr Author With the help of someone on another forum i have made a basic hospital cage. Tiki is in a cardboard box with a unscented heat pack at the bottom with a tea towel around it. She has some gatorade in her water to help her stay hydrated (if she will drink it) and i've also mixed a little gatorade into some soft food incase she wants to eat more than she wants to drink. As a lid i used the grate out of the bottom of Blinkie's old cage and she has a couple of low perches. She really feels thin, i hope she gets better. We're taking her to the vet shortly to be checked out, hopefully the vet working has enough knowledge to be able to properly diagnose and treat her, but it shouldn't be too tricky, i think that it would be the same as what Jelly had.
October 22, 200618 yr Author okay, back from the vet. Tiki weighs 28g, if you had seen her before you would know this is incredibly light! If i had to guess i would've said that when i put her in the breeding cage a couple of weeks ago she would've been about 50g. Anyway, she had a crop wash done and that confirmed she has what Jelly had, she got the same treatment for it and i have to keep her warm and quiet. She can stay in my homemade hospital cage for a few days then go into the spare cage, it's easier for me to clean and change her seed and water over in the cage than the box. Hopefully she'll get well soon. And i really hope no more of them get this, because taking 20 budgies to the vet would not be fun AT ALL! I think if more get sick i would try to get them in to see the registered avian vet, i think i might start going there rather than the place i've been going to the last couple of times.
October 22, 200618 yr oh I am so sorry for you and tiki, and I hope she gets better very soon. Another tip I was given by an avian vet was to place a lamp with a 40 watt bulb over her box to keep a constant heat. although I found the 40 watt got a bit too hot so at night I replaced it with a 25 watt, so it would not overheat the bird and also I was afraid the 40 watt might cause a fire (while we were sleeping) Best of luck Bea, I am thinking of you Yes it always happens when the driver is not home. Cindy
October 22, 200618 yr Hugs Bea you love those budgies so much - I would be concerned though if it happenes again because whatever is causing it is laying around dorminant and coming back which is very scary. Have you done a good disinfecting of the aviary latey? That may help? My concern is that the birds are harboring this and then bam it just comes out. If you know what it is can you post it or you can do a google search to see if you can learn more? Ask the avian vet at least over the phone if this is something that can be dorminant then all of a sudden come to a head. Just thinking out loud here. Hope Tiki is better and fingers crossed :ausb:
October 22, 200618 yr Author Here is Tiki's warm cage - there's a heat pack under the box. It's trichomoniasis that both her and Jelly have/had and after Jelly got ill i thoroughly cleaned the aviary and all the food and water dishes. So yes, everything has been cleaned recently. I may see if i can get a hold of Dr Sandy Hume (the registered avian vet) on Tuesday and see if she can tell me what i should do.
October 22, 200618 yr oh look at that you are such a good mum...I will look it up and see what I can find too. :ausb:
October 22, 200618 yr Bea with two being sick, it might pay to find out if you can treat the rest of the birds. Also find out how this illness is transmited and address the problem.
October 22, 200618 yr okay Bea, if this is what it is it is serious from what I have been reading but is treatable. Please read up on it. http://members.cox.net/slodwyer/trichomoni...budgerigars.htm - this is the best article and it says in there about the vomiting where some people may think it is just regurgitation. http://www.tuxford.dabsol.co.uk/masterbree...chap9trich3.htm This is from Merck Vterinary http://www.merckvetmanual.com/mvm/index.js...m/bc/201400.htm Edited October 22, 200618 yr by lovey
October 23, 200618 yr Author I read the first link just now. I guess i will need to get the whole flock treated but how in the world do you get 20 budgies to the vet? Tiki doesn't seem to be doing so well, i've seen her drink once but she's still vomitting. I got up every couple of hours during the night to reheat the heat pack so she didn't get cold. I'm racing home between classes today too. I don't want her to die. Both my regular vet and the avian vet aren't working till tomorrow though so i just have to wait till then to call, i'll try the avian vet i think.
October 23, 200618 yr According to the article Bea you can treat them through the drinking water so your vet should be able to give to to you knowing that the 2 of your birds have had it. Reading into the first article it says that many aviary owners will treat their whole flock 2 a year for this. I would IM Karen aka Bubbles and see if she has ever come across this yet or heard of it since she was a vet tech.
October 23, 200618 yr Author I'll talk to her next time i see her on msn. I'm really worried about Tiki, i have a feeling she's not going to be around much longer.
October 23, 200618 yr Author She's going to die. She's all skin and bones. I went and got some syringes at the chemist to try to get some food into her but i'm almost certain she can't swallow anymore, i just wish i had noticed she wasn't right sooner. I cleaned her up a bit and gave her a little head scratch and put her back in her box where she's lying on the floor, her breathing is really shallow.

I haven't been able to access the internet for some hours due to a problem in our area. I wish I could help you but I truly think you are doing all that you can. I had one bird doing this only once and the outcome was not good. The only good news is my other birds weren't afflicted with it. I haven't had any reccurence since with any birds. I wish I could be there with you to help you through this. I can offer no other suggestions of things to try other than what you are already doing. Be strong and be there for your bird
October 23, 200618 yr Bea I am so sorry. . It might be a good idea to ring the vet tomorrow and see if yoy can do something about the rest of the birds.
October 23, 200618 yr Oh I am so sorry honey ((hugs)) from Lovey, Pretty and Merlin, I can feel the sadness all the way over here as I type. As it was mentioned you love your budgies and you did the best you could.
