Posted October 21, 200618 yr Tonight I noticed Scooter doing something he's never done before. He was very active this evening. He was running all around his cage and playing with his toys, which isn't unusual for him, but he seemed more rambunctious tonight. And I noticed every couple mintues he'd stop and scratch his head with his feet several times and would preen himself. Seemed like more than usual. Then he'd start playing again. After awhile, he ate a little bit and then I noticed him scratching his head and then opening his beak really wide, like he had something stuck in his throat. He did this several times. I don't know if maybe he was trying to regurgitate or throwup? He's never done it before though, or at least not that I've seen, and nothing came up. He seems to be fine now. I've covered him up for the night and he's falling asleep. What could this be? Should I be worried?
October 21, 200618 yr how old is Scooter? He could be starting to go through a molt which is making him itchy. Opening the beak wide is like a yawn he is okay, Pretty does it all the time.
October 21, 200618 yr Author It wasn't a yawn cause I've seen him yawn plenty of times. He was sticking his neck out really far and doing it. Like a dog would if he was gonna throw up. He seems fine this morning so I don't know what that was all about. And I'm not really sure how old he is. He's young though. The pet store couldn't give me his exact age, just that he was still very young. They had just gotten them in the day before. I've had him for 2 months and a week.
October 21, 200618 yr it is normal Pretty does it too with the opening their beak and stretching it out.
October 21, 200618 yr My guys do it all the time. It looks to me like it is a regurgitation thing - bringing up a bit of seed from the crop. I see this happening between birds a lot, and sometimes a lone bird will do it. Unless they are puking I don't think it is anything to worry about. It looks kind of funny. (Laughing out loud)
October 22, 200618 yr Author Thanks guys. Good to hear that it's normal behavior. I'm really paranoid when it comes to him (Laughing out loud).
November 8, 200618 yr hey luvnscooter, your budgies isn't yawning or regurgitating anything. with his ambunctious behaviour he would have eaten faster then normal and preened faster, because he was running around he would have been breathing more rapidly, so when he ate and preened he would have breathed some seed husk or feather dust in. birds open their beaks and stretch out their necks to try and get the particle out much our cough but more gentle hope this answers your question. Sco-tie.
