My First Baby Budgie

Hi Everyone :D

I am so excited to find this website and forum and have found it very user friendly. I am celebrating my first hatched baby chick today!!!! I am a little nervous about beginning to breed and have a few questions to ask. I have been reading through lots of info on the net and wondering exactly what is classified as soft food? Is it the same as this hand rearing baby food some have mentioned? I feed my birds the best kinds of quality seed I can find and put many types of grasses in their cage every day which they love. I also find they enjoy branches of she-oak more than any type of gum tree I put in. Also a heather type plant from the bush with small white flowers seems to be the prefered snack for my nesting female. Am I doing the right thing? I ordered some Dr Rob Marshall supplements for feeding birds from a website tonight, does anyone use these supplements and are they necessary? I am thinking of introducing vegetables into their diet as well but am not sure how to go about it.

I had 10 budgies in a reasonable sized avairy which have paired off with varying success. Recently I had to seperate 2 pairs into another smaller avairy because of fighting amongst the females. Only one pair is so far laying eggs with the first one hatching today.

I would also like to know a little bit about how to tell all the different types apart. I read terms like pied, opaline, lace wing etc and don't really know what they mean. Can anyone direct me to a book or website that can help?

Thanks Budgie Baby

Soft foods are mixture of high protein foods with minerals and vitamins. I use Grated carrot, Soaked Hulled oats and Budgie Starter as a basis. Some people use a hard boiled egg sheel and all blended with some bread, carrot and pasley. There are some recepies on this forum under health.

You are on the right track. Becareful not to supply the wrong branches. Plants - Good and Bad

I use Vetafarm products and found them to be very good. You can get these from good pet stores or produce stores.

Bird Tracker is a good program to track your birds, it also has a great genetic section.

Have a look through the Genetic section of this forum. There is a lot of information that members have posted.

You can click on the link in my signature to go to my web site. It has information and links to other sites.

I hope you enjoy the forum and remember ask questions , we will try to help if we can. :(

Give them the vegges and friut now on a plate with the treats they already love like the grasses and you should do well with them eating it. I found that when parents have bubs to feed they will eat any sort of 'fresh' food more readily than other times.

also there is a simply page of genetics on my website just click the link in my signature

Also welcome and congatuations on the BUB

Thanks guys for your help, I'll check out the info you recommend. I got up the courage to take another peak in the box yesterday and was rewarded with another baby budgie. Is it okay to look often? and can you touch them or does the mother reject them if you do?

By the way I will have to spend some time on this forum and figure out how you do all those lovely things with signatures and photos. Just gorgeous!!

Thanks

You go into my controls up the top of the page to edit those sort of things.

It's important to check on both mother and babies each day, I do so morning and night at least. But I love watching the bubs and tend to look more often, I hand the babies from around one week old and have never had a hen regect them becuase of it.

Also handling them help to calm them to humans and hand so they are close to hand feed babies.

I Think Its Soft Breed With Water and veges

sorry my speeling ::(;)

Thanks Nathan and Nerwen,

I really do appreciate the feed back and am trying breads and vegies according to the good food list I have now found.

I'm sitting up to 12pm every night trying to read all the good forum topics and learning so fast but there is so much still to learn.

thanks again
