Posted October 17, 200618 yr I am a 16 year old student from Sydney. I have got an Avery in the garden and have been hand rearing babies for the last few years. I am sorry to say that I have not got a 100% success rate bringing them all through. I feed them a egg and biscuits mix from the pet store with a syringe until they can eat seed. Can some one tell me if there would be better food available for young babies and if and when I have to worm them. At the moment I have four 5 week old bayies to feed, one of them is light yellow and has red eyes. Could that be an Albino? If yes does anyone know more about them?
October 17, 200618 yr There is a hand rearing mix made by Passwells that I use and I am sure there will be other people along to help with more suggestions. PM Jenene for some help. She handrears babies all the time. There is an excellent book that is well worth buying called A Guide To Handraising Parrots by Phil Digney ....but it covers most birds. It's brilliant and can help you a lot. I can't say I have done a lot of handrearing and wouldnt say I was truly successful at it, but there is no better place than on this forum for people here who will be willing to help you out. A light yellow baby with red eyes may well be a creamino also known as a yellowface albino. The brighter yellow ones with red eyes are Lutinos. Good on you for trying to do this at your age. All the best karen :angel1: Edited October 17, 200618 yr by Bubbles
October 17, 200618 yr Sarem, One of the reasons you are not having a lot of success with handrearing is because Egg and Biscuit mix doesnt contain all the nutrients that baby budgies need. Thats like humans living on bread and butter all our lives. You need to buy a special Handrearing Mix. Passwells is good, the one I am using at the moment is Kaytee Exact. It contains all the necessary vitamins and minerals the chicks need. I'm sure you will have better success if you take them off the Egg and Biscuit mix.
October 17, 200618 yr Wombaroo, Passwell Parrot Crumbles I have heard about those foods but have trouble finding them at the shops. I am from Sydney-Blue Mountains can you help
October 17, 200618 yr These are items sold at specific bird places and some petshops. Jenene has told you about a brand that works for her and she has handraised babies successfully. The parrot crumbles is, I believe for older budgies not the baby ones you are raising right now. Quote You need to buy a special Handrearing Mix. Passwells is good, the one I am using at the moment is Kaytee Exact. Try any of the bird dealer places and other stores like stock feed merchants as they generally sell bird products too.
October 17, 200618 yr This is a recipe from my book with a chapter on handraising. 1 Cup ground sunflower seeds 1 cup ground almonds 4 granita biscuits 1 packet of farex (baby rice cereal) 1 tablespoon glucose powder 1 cup of corn meal maize Grind it all finely and mix with warm water to a fineconsistancy. Keep refrigerated. The book also says that commercial mixes are successful and far less hassle to use.
