October 15, 200618 yr Mickey, You can use the following site to help you find an avian vet. Even if there isn't one directly in your city, there is bound to be one somewhere nearby. Avian vets are harder to find, I'll agree with you there, but they *are* out there. http://aav.org/vet-lookup/ Good luck!
October 16, 200618 yr My friend says that her budgie did the same thing and he got over it! So i don't know. Thanks Again, MIckey Friends can give a lot of bad advice. Especially if they are not trained to recognise illnesses in birds. Rarely does a budgie "get over it" on it's own. By the time they show that they are sick, they are usually very sick. You have been given good advice to take this bird to a vets and now it's up to you to do the right thing by your bird.
October 16, 200618 yr Mickey, birds can't tell us what is wrong with them (they are worse than emoting than dogs or cats) so come tomorrow, Monday, do try and find a vet experienced in bird care. You (and Joey) will feel a whole lot better even if it's nothing major.
October 16, 200618 yr Mickey, what is your bird eating? If he wasn't fluffed up I would say that "green and runny" could be a normal by-product of watery green vegetables (this could be what your friend's bird got). But you say he is fluffy all day (by this I am assuming you mean the feathers do not sit smoothly, he does not look 'sleek') - this is a very clear sign of sickness. Being fluffy all day means he is devoting all his energy to fighting sickness, and there is not enough to maintain his normal processes. So he has to fluff up to stay warm. Here's an article on poopology - it applies for cockatiels not budgies.. but it gives you an idea of generally what "different looking poop" means - http://healthybird.net/Poop%20ology.htm - and it's usually not good. Please see a vet as soon as you can. Even if it is nothing big, it is better to be safe than sorry. As Phoebe said you will both feel better. When a bird gets sick, it is very unlikely that it will simply recover from it. Birds aren't like mammals. They try their hardest to conceal their sickness - that means that it is advanced by the time you see the obvious signs. I wish you all the best. It's hard to find a bird vet but they're out there. Try ringing a normal vet and ask if they can refer you to an avian vet.
October 16, 200618 yr The Vets were i live have no CLUE how to treat birds. So i don't know what to do???? Thanks again for all of the advice! Mickey
October 16, 200618 yr Did you try looking online for one? You may have to drive an hour or more when you find one, so don't just look in your immediate neighborhood. Unfortunately, this is part of responsible bird ownership that pet stores don't tell you when you purchase your bird. You owe it to your bird to find a vet that will either treat your bird, can refer you to an avian vet, or will treat your bird while consulting with an avian vet if there really are none within a hundred miles or so. And I know in parts of Canada that is the case. If you haven't already, if there are none near you when you search online, call the vets in your phone book and ask for a referral to an avian vet. Lots of people have birds, so the local vets will know where to refer you to. Please try, and let us know what you find out. In the meanwhile, do not feed anything but seed and millet in case the unusual stools are caused by something else in the diet. If you recently opened a new bag of seed and then this started, the seed could be old or off. Take that one back and get a new bag if you think this could be the cause. Keep your bird warm, either by aiming a heat lamp into one side of the cage (cover the other sides) or use a heating bad underneath the cage. If you need more help in setting up a hospital cage we will be glad to help. You want him in an area where he will be warm, but not overheated. If you use a heat lamp, make sure there is a place in the cage where he can go to escape the heat if it gets too hot. Edited October 16, 200618 yr by Rainbow

October 17, 200618 yr hope all works out just a question I see the picture in your profile of your budgie bitting the cat's nose that is super cute (mine did the same thing - but I learned better here on the boards) My concern is that cat salvia is dangerous and can make a budgie sick because of the bacteria it harbors. So if he does it often I would personally stop it because you are not sure what got him sick right now. It could be anything but a precaution.
October 17, 200618 yr Actually Lovely that picture is not a picture of my bird. I got the picture off the internet. I don't even have a cat. But thanks for the advice if i did!
October 18, 200618 yr I emailed 2 vets in winnipeg Manitoba and i gave them my phone number so i hope that they phone or email me back soon (fingers crossed)
October 20, 200618 yr My Booboo was fluffed up, lethargic, not eating and not making any sounds and her droppings were not normal, eg. they were watery and not the usual colour. I let her stay that way for two days hoping she'd get better on her own and on the third day took her to the vet. He said if we'd left it any longer Booboo would have died as it only takes 48 hours for a bird to starve to death. Booboo stayed at the vets for three days, was force fed food and water, had faecal tests and a blood test, was given medication and luckily got healthy again. It cost hundreds of dollars but it was worth it. If you really love your budgie (like I do) get it some veterinarian help. Edited October 20, 200618 yr by Eily
