Posted October 14, 200618 yr A few months ago i bought my budgie (louy) a new play pen for his birthday. But when i took him out to play with it he got scared. What could i do for him to get him use to the play pen?
October 14, 200618 yr Hi, I would just set him down near the play pen and put a favorite treat in the middle of it and let him see where you put it. Make sure that you don't give him the treat at any other time. With patience, eventually he will not be able to resist. Then he will associate the play pen with the good treat and will be happy to see it and go there on his own. Good luck, I hope it works out. Shell
October 14, 200618 yr Agree with Shell, your guy is probably scared of it right now, let him get to know it bit by bit with a treat. A footnote - not all of my budgies like their play center, they either love it or ignore it.
October 14, 200618 yr how often do you let him out? It is good to let them out daily if you can or at least 3x a week because the less you let them out the more comfortable they are with their cage and scared of their surrounding.

October 15, 200618 yr when you are studying, doing your homework even just an 1 a day is better then nothing at all :bluebudgie:.
October 17, 200618 yr Author if i put my budgie down on like a table and he either flys off to the cage or to a high place should i just continue putting him their so he will learn its safe or maybe should i put food out. Another thing is some of my family are a bit scared of him. They wont even pat him P.s Bea, are you Charlote stevens? Edited October 17, 200618 yr by Budgie's r cool
October 17, 200618 yr No i'm not. I take it your budgie isn't tame. First thing is that budgies don't like being petted and cuddled most of the time, so you shouldn't be trying to do that, it will stress him out and make him more afraid of you. Have you considered getting his wings clipped to help with taming? If you live nearby i could show you how to do this - otherwise an avian vet can show you. I think it would help as having a tame budgie that you can handle easily makes bringing them out to play much easier and as he's already set in flying up high it could be difficult to teach him not to do this.
October 17, 200618 yr Author hmmmmm maybe i do pat him to much. but i would hate to clip his wings i just couldnt. but my budgie flys off because he is scared of the furniture, i think.
October 17, 200618 yr More likely that he is scared of being handled. Clipping is painless and when done correctly doesn't prevent flight but slow it down and prevent a bird from gaining too much height while flying meaning that he can't get to hard to reach places. I'm not saying you must clip him, just trying to give you a proper understanding of what the term "wing clipping" means. The flight feathers grow back during the next moult so it's not permanent either.
