Pics Of The "winter Box" In The Aviary

With winter coming in my neck of the woods, a lot of people who are thinking of getting an aviary wonder how to heat it. We added the winter box last week...

As you can see, it has a top, back and 2 sides, but is open on the bottom & front. There are 3 dowel sticks for them to roost on, and a heat lamp attached to the top with a screen covering it. This stays in until around march - april

(an you also get a good view of the blinds i use too. these i roll down each night)

remember, I am is southern california, so it doesnt get that cold here. In the middle of winter we can get to the low 40's but only on occasion does it get into the 30's for us.

Great Idea, but it's strange thinking about winter. We are going into Summer with 41 deg C in the avairy over the weekend.

(Laughing out loud) daz!

(sorry mods, i thought i had them under!)

  • 5 months later...

Budgies originated in Australian desert like climates. Very hot duing the day, very cold at night.

Then the english bred them but so did the germans.. in snowy conditions... so who thinks they need heating???

Umm, i do

and since they have been bred well out of australian climates and bred in the US, no I dont think they could survive a winter going down to 26f in my area.

I agree, there are no outdoor aviaries here in Ohio - US that I am aware of we can barely find budgies of different mutations like they do in AU. Here it goes down to 0 F in the winter.

burrrr, big difference from Ohio to So cal! Yeah, I couldnt get away with one in your neck of the wood Elly!

 Butnow temperature is not a worry, Spring has Sprung!

I couldnt agree more! not much longer and the box will come down, just need to get over the cold/breezy nights. If I remember right we took it out mid/end of april last year..

Funny to hear winter and Southern California in the same sentence.

I think the box is a great idea. My babies would have to come in for the winter. It's just too cold here.
