Posted October 5, 200618 yr I Got 2 new budgies today!! YEAH!!! I think one is a normal violet...Girl? The other is male and is some sort of opaline, pied variety perhaps? Also the both seem to have iris rings so maybe someone could tell how old they are? I just love them already. I havn't named them yet so suggestions would be cool too. Here are the pics. I will get more when they have settled down some. Thanks Shell
October 5, 200618 yr All I can tell you is they are beautiful birds! (Laughing out loud)! If I may, I would like to make a suggestion get rid of those plastic coated perches, (I have a dislike of them!) Find some branches to use instead - they can then have fun chewing them and they are better for their foot health.
October 5, 200618 yr Thanks for responding! Yeah I know. I hate those plastic things too, but it is the cage they have been in for a long time. I just got them today and don't want to upset them too much by too much change. As soon as they get used to me and my household. they will move to a bigger cage with better "stuff". I love watching them. They are in love and already trying to mate all over the place. So I guess they are not too upset about the move. (Laughing out loud) Shell
October 5, 200618 yr The first one I would say a clearfight dominant pied opaline and the hen I would say violet that looks very close to Merlin's coloration when I take pics with very dark cheek spots. If they have iris rings they and their cere is already changed they are over 6 months at least. It is hard to tell if they are over 1 yr though.
October 5, 200618 yr Thanks bunches Lovey. I appreciate your help. I hope you don't mind one more question... what variety of babes would these two make? Thanks again, Shell
October 6, 200618 yr I'm not sure with the age of the pied, his cere is still very pinkish which means he is under the age of 4 month.
October 6, 200618 yr Nerwen is right I didn't get a good shot at the cere and if it is still a pinkish then he would be under 4 months and they can have the iris rings that early. BUT he does look like he is going or has had a first moult because I don't see the baby bar lines that close to the cere. As what babies, I like to work out the different mutations separate easier for me. Since is the opaline all your males would be normal split to opaline and your females would be opalines. As for the clearflight this is dominant over a normal. There is a single factor clearfight and in that case the chances are 50% normals and 50% clearflights BUT if you have a double factor clearfight (which is impossible to tell visually) then you would have 100% chance of clearflight pieds. As for the violet gene there is single factor and double again. Single Factor Violet would give you a chance of 50% single factor violets and 50% normals BUT if you have a DB factor Violet they the chance would be 100% single factor violets. Know you will not get any green babies. So we will see how I did (Laughing out loud)
October 6, 200618 yr Thanks again! As for the age, we wont be having any babes till the weather warms up again anyway. Next summer is soon enough but with my three pairs, I just know that I will be getting some awesome little ones. It is hard to wait, but I certainly wouldn't want to take any chances with these gorgeous little lives. All three pairs are bonded and loving with their mates so I am sure they will be good parents. *fingers crossed* I can't wait for another sunny day so I can take more pictures.(Laughing out loud) Shell
October 6, 200618 yr . BUT he does look like he is going or has had a first moult because I don't see the baby bar lines that close to the cere. No neither do I, so the cere might start to change now. Also the Opaline gene lightens the bars slightly.
October 6, 200618 yr No, I don't think so, they look black or dark gray in person, and his cere is pretty dark in person. No pink. I will get better pictures of his face tomorrow if the sun shines. He sure is a pretty thing though! I was so excited when I found him that I immediatly begged my husband and had to promise that I wouldn't buy any more birds for a long while. I just love my little sweeties. Can anyone suggest names for these two? thanks so much, Shell
