Posted October 5, 200618 yr Hi, Haven't been here for awhile, but my budgie Olly, (turned out to be a girl ) has layed 2 eggs, she is the only budgie i have so i know they're infertile, but how often do budgies do this? Also all day she just sits in the bottom of her cage on her eggs, shes seems very clucky and has all of a sudden calmed right down. Olly would only be about 8 months old. She hasn't got any nesting boxes, what should i be doing??
October 5, 200618 yr Hens can lay with out mating. Your bird has decided that the time is right. I would throw the eggs away and rearrang the cage. She may stop or you may need to get advice from Phoebe.
October 9, 200618 yr hi pecker- try removing all material from the bottom of thee cage, you'll have to wipe it down a couple times a day but it will help discourage her, also remove any mirrors or reflective toys, or "budgie friends" (the plastic ones they make as friends). they can lay one small clutch and thats it or they can lay numerous times a year. either way its not very healthy because its not regulated by hormones as when they are mating. make sure she is getting a very good varied diet, she especially needs calcium so they eggs are formed right, you don't want her eggbound. if it becomes an ongoing problem her health could be at risk - i would recommend taking her to the vet, at the bird hospital where I am a tech we give hormone injections the the chronic egg layers which are very helpful and not harmful to the birds overall health hope this helps- good luck kristi
