Posted September 26, 200618 yr My budgie Scooter will only come to me when I'm ready to put him back in his cage. The rest of my family interact with him too, but he's my bird so I'm the one who takes care of him and I'm around him all the time. One of his favorite places to sit is on top of my TV because it's the highest spot in my bedroom (it's on top of my entertainment center). When I'm ready to put him away, all I have to do is show him his perch and he jumps right on, no questions asked. If anyone else does it, he won't do it. He'll just back away or he'll fly off. It's so funny that he knows the difference :(Laughing out loud): It's the same way when asking him to go on your finger, though he's a little better about that. He has to be asked a few times to go "up" if it's on anyone other than me. I usually don't even need to ask. I just show him my finger and he does it. Before I owned a bird, I never knew they were so picky about their people. But they are just as picky as a dog, if not more so :(Laughing out loud): It's amazing how smart they are. They really know the difference.
September 26, 200618 yr It amazes me that so many people still have the opinion of having budgies as pets as "oh, well it's JUST a bird." They are so much smarter than they are often given credit for, and yes, they do know the difference between humans. I think they definitely establish a list of who their favourite people are. With both my boys I was always favourite person (though I was the only one who really bonded with Smudge in the short time he was with us as he was a more nervous personality), and for some reason, both birds were not at all keen on my brother...he was never mean to them in any way or anything, they just would not seek him out to sit on or sing to. Pip's opinion of my brother did improve during his ten years with us, he was fine with both my parents...he even adopted a pair of my mum's slippers as a favourite "toy" to hide in. One person who did have a special place in Pip's heart was my granddad, even though he didn't see him that often...Pip liked to sit on his head and look at himself in my granddad's glasses and my granddad used to whistle a lot which he seemed to like too. In fact, the only time I ever have come close to losing a bird out the door/window, was when my grandparents were leaving after a visit, and despite my best efforts to keep him occupied, Pip saw my granddad leaving and flew after him, landing on his cap, with the door wide open in front of him. Obviously there was something about my granddad that Pip just could not resist....I wish I knew what makes them like some people above others, particularly when they are not the one that feeds them and takes care of them.
September 26, 200618 yr In a way that story is a lot like how Woodie relates to me. She loves to "inspect" my glasses, "style" my hair and when she's in a goofy mood, she will land on my head!!!!!! I don't know why she likes my head so much! As for Cloud...he just likes to sit, chirrup, and chill. Woodie likes to bond with Momma. They do take to my friend Lacey the many times she has been over to my apt. They just like her and they bonded with her even if she doesn't take care of them like I do. They are a little intimidated of my dad and really big people, as I'm not a big person. My dad doesn't know anything about birds and so he likes to stand looking over them--WHICH they HATE! Makes them feel like, "Is he gonna eat us? Get us? Hurt us? WHAAAATTT?!!?!?!"
October 8, 200618 yr Skip is really funny, when i put him on my head, he holds onto my hair (its long) and hangs upsidown so he can look at my face, he always gives big happy chirps when he does this, its like he 'loses' me when he is on the top of my head. The other thing he does is when i am sitting cross legged on the floor/couch etc he come and snuggles up to my left foot, only ever that one and he will sit there for as long as i let him snuggling and talking to my foot!!!.
