Posted September 25, 200618 yr Hi again, my all white budgie has lots of green underneath him by his bum. is this normal. it looks like he keeps trying to clean his feathers there but the green isnt coming off. i bought some budgie cleaner and sprayed the budgie following the instructions but the green hasnt come off. He was out of his cage for the first time yesterday and was fine then he flew back into his cage after about 30 minutes. Now when i go to stroke his belly he tries to bite me but not hard. should i be worried about it.
September 25, 200618 yr I have never heard of "budgie cleaner" But are you saying he has green droppings that are staining his feathers at his rear end ? Is he acting at all unwell....sitting puffed up and fluffy looking ? Does he have loose and greenish droppings ? If so, he would need to see an avian vet. If not, I guess I would have bitten you too if I'd been cleaned with "budgie cleaner" But, seriously, is there any signs of ill health as well as what you have said ? September 25, 200618 yr No, there are no signs, he is sitting up in his cage and tweeting. his head isnt droped and hes not fluffed or puffy, he's eating and drinking as normal. the biting is soft and hasnt drawn blood. some of his droppings looked a little green. I purchased the cleaning spray from the pet superstore and it recomends you spray them twice a week.
September 25, 200618 yr I'd toss the cleaning spray as many pet store products are unsafe for budgies. Plain water is best when bathing budgies. As far as the problem itself, what are his droppings like other than green? Are they pretty firm or have they been looser/watery?
September 25, 200618 yr some are white and some are dark, they are firm. how do you get the budgie to have a bath. i attached the bath to the side of the cage and he just looks at it.
September 25, 200618 yr Some budgies don't like bathing in the specially-made bath dishes. You can gently mist him with warm water, take him in the shower with you, offer a larger shallow dish or offer wet romaine lettuce leaves (or other dark leafy greens).
September 26, 200618 yr :ausb: As eterri says, mist him and forget the commercial sprays. Look at the post under budgie maintenance from May and you will see some excellent recommendations given by Lovey so you can use natural products to clean your containers, as for the cage, just put it under the shower and scrub, scrub, scrub. :dbb1:
September 26, 200618 yr Just so we are clear here this is poop stuck to feather or is this the actual colour of the feathers?? If you can post picture we would understand better, if you can we can understand as well.
September 26, 200618 yr The green colour looks like it has actually dyed the feathers, the picture isnt very clear but i will keep trying to get a better one. http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l183/far...eenfeathers.jpg Edited September 29, 200618 yr by daz
September 26, 200618 yr I can't tell that well but does he eat alot of green veggies? Either way if it is poo that is not good if you give him a through bath and let him dry you will see if it is feathering or staining.
September 26, 200618 yr I have only had him since wednesday and he has always had seed, im trying to give him veggies at the moment. It looks like it is staining. How do i bath him. i have attached the bath to the side of the cage and hes not interested, i sprayed him thoroughly with tepid water but it still doesnt come off. He wont let me pick him up and to be honest i wouldnt know how to incase i hurt him. he will let me put my hand in the cage and stroke his belly but thats about it. he wont step on my finger or anything yet.
September 26, 200618 yr the last thing what you said is what you don't feel comfortable with is what I would do to get a through washing personally (that is just me). A better picture again would help, or just a quick trip to the vet is my personal opinion too (an avian one at that)
September 27, 200618 yr The picture doesn't look good, he's obviously having some trouble with his droppings. A trip to the avian vet is definitely in order. Time will see to his feathers being white again but not unless his illness is treated. It's not uncommon for a budgie to come home with some sort of infection, especially bacterial. What were the conditions like at the store/breeder where you got him?
September 27, 200618 yr I got him from the hollybush centre which was recommended, it seemed clean and the staff seemed to know what they were talking about. i will take him to the vets and have him checked out. thanks for all you help
