Posted September 25, 200618 yr Hi there, I have to admit that when it comes to birds, I know absolutely nothing at all!! That is why I went in search of a site that I hoped would be helpful for our current dilema!! But, before I ask for advice, let me tellyou our story. Recently our beautiful bright yellow girl, whom we lovingly named Nessy after an Irish back packer we know, shockingly and unexpectedly fell off her perch (no pun intended!). My husband and I were devestated. Not more though than our two year old son. He was heart broken. From birth we had encouraged him to talk to her and blow her a kiss each night before bed. So when we placed her small coffin in our garden, we said goodnight one last time. For the next three weeks bed time was a nightmare. That was about when hubby came home with a small shoe box with a green and yellow and a blue budgie. Not replacements by any means, just new family members. So we purchased a large avery and named them Buzz and Woody. Any parent of young children would know these characters. So like their namesakes, they hated each other!!! We thought maybe they just needed company so once again hubby came home with another small shoebox!!! Two tiny budgies peered out. One white and the other a beautiful lemon colour. These two, though had bright red eyes!!! I'll ask later!!! So Mike and Sully joined the flock. Buzz and Woody joined forces as did Mike and Sully. Recently Mike began to loose feathers and became very possessive of one of the nesting boxes. Mike is now Michelle!!!! She has just layed 4 small eggs and Sully is on constant guard as an expectant dad!!!! So that's our family. Now the questions start!!! I'm hoping that someone may guide us. Child birth for me was no problem but when it comes to hatchlings, give me hours of labour any day!! :glare:
September 25, 200618 yr Welcome to the forums! :glare: There is HEAPS of great info for newbie breeders in the Budgerigar Breeding section so definitely have a browse through the posts there, i'm sure you'll learn heaps. If you've got any questions at all (even if they seem stupid) just ask away and you'll get great answers. And Mike and Sully (love the names of all your birds by the way) are inos (albino if they're white, lutino if they're yellow, creamino if they're pale yellow). One thing that concerns me is the possibly young age of Mike (Michelle), did you get them from a pet shop?

We did get Mike and Sully from a pet shop a couple of months ago. The pet shop owner said they would have been a couple of months old so I'm guessing they would be maybe 5 months old. Could there be a problem? I have no idea about how to look after babies!!! If there will be any!!
September 25, 200618 yr They're much too young to breed. It would be like an 11 year old human child giving birth and raising a child. They're neither physically or emotionally ready for the stress of being parents. I suggest removing the eggs and nest box until all the birds are over a year old. Also, it's quite possible that Mike and Sully are siblings in which case they should never breed. :glare:
September 25, 200618 yr Hi there, very happy to have you here. :fear As Bea says the birds are way too young to be breeding even though they can and have begun. A nesting box is something you put in a cage or aviary for the sole purpose of breeding and it actually encourages that behaviour in budgies even when they are too young to raise a successful family. Some people new to budgies, think of a nesting box as a place for their budgies to sleep or are encouraged by petshops to buy them along with evrything else. Petshop staff don't actually know enough about birds, mostly, to offer good advice....and that's why you are here. It would be in the best interests of the birds to remove the nesting boxes and the eggs at this stage. It would be disappointing all over again for your youngster to watch baby budgies die if parents don't care for them properly, which can happen and often does. Welcome :glare: and we love photos here if you would like to show off your birds Edited September 25, 200618 yr by Bubbles
