Posted October 1, 200420 yr hay i have recently bought a bird. i have had resently noticed a problem with his beak it has started to crack he is about 10 wk old i have him on normal budgy bird mix seed, he has a cuttle fish bone and an iodine block should i take him to a vet ne ideas thanks ATD :bluebudgie:
October 1, 200420 yr I think some peeling might be normal, as I've seen lots of budgies in pet stores with peeling beaks, around the edge and toward the tip. A good diet may make it stop, and the act of rubbing the beak on a rough perch after they eat may keep it to a minimum. If it is cracking though, I would take him to an avian vet.
October 1, 200420 yr cheers all his pearches r soft and even wood would a higher source of calcium help? he is active and okay within himself althou when i got him he had sum sort of mites but i treated with mite spray. no idea. just have to moniter him. thanks 4 ya help. ATD
October 2, 200420 yr You're welcome. One thing I will add is that if you are only feeding him seed, now would be a good time to introduce him to fresh fruits and vegetables. A seed-only diet will shorten his lifespan. :bluebudgie: What's your bird's name and what color is he?
October 2, 200420 yr yes rainbow is so right - i had 3 budgies on a mostly seed diet, and they only lived about 4 years each :bluebudgie: i suggest nutriberries if they wont eat pellets, though. and mine have peel-y beaks towards the tip, too.
October 3, 200420 yr fresh fruit and veg? any or is there sumfings u cant feed. im tryin broccoli but no jo at the mo will keep tryin thou. his name is sky and blue wiv black/gray on wings. ATD :bluebudgie:
October 4, 200420 yr Hi again Sky, my budgie enjoys cress and grass, grated carrot, fresh pea pods, spring greens, celery leaves, all thoroughly washed first. It may take a while for him to try it but just keep offering it. Julie :bluebudgie:
October 4, 200420 yr Mine eat baby spinach leaves, broccoli, baby carrots, green and red peppers, apple, grapes, any dark green or red lettuces, and carrot tops. I also mix pellets in with their seed mixtures. Like Julie said, it may take awhile for your bird to try something new, but keep offering it. If he won't eat fresh food from a dish (some budgies won't) then you can try clipping the food to the side of the cage near a favorite perch. It will seem like you waste alot at first, but once your bird figures out it is food, then there's no problem. Just make sure you don't leave it in the cage too long, as you don't want your bird eating spoiled food. If you wouldn't touch it, neither should your bird. :bluebudgie: Edited October 4, 200420 yr by Rainbow
