How To Set Up A Breeding Cage And Manage The Breeding Of Budgerigars

Featured Replies

Very nice work and so fast !! :P You will have to watch the weight of them on the front of the cage, in case they tip over. May need to counter balance them with something.

PS you may want to edit...the hole is bigger than 12mm.

Sorry Kaz, hubby was talking about the dowel hole instead of the other one which was made with a 50mm speed bit.

The boxes are very heavy and will have to have extra supports attached to the cabinet that Dave doesn't know that he is making next week!

This brings back memories.. All the breeding cabinets are changed but the nest boxes are still the same.

I am altering a few for this yer's breeding season. I've found the 9mm sides bowed a bit last year which cause the backs not to sit in the grooves properly so I am going to a 12mm side to stop this. I'll try it on a few to see how it goes first.

Thought i'd revisit this topic... I don't weight the chciks any more and can tell by there size and age how they are going... If i can't ring the chick at 8 days (leg too big) i'm very happy and excited.

Thanks for bumping this Daz - its great to see what you've done and helps with ideas and information :raincloud:

sorry it just me i know but i dont understand this bit

if i cant ring a chick at eight days im very happy and exited

does this mean that you ring your chicks by eight days then thats great if longer than that then the chick is not of as good size and quality

sorry im just a bit confused wouldnt you be cutt if the leg was to big to get ring on

No the chick's leg should be able to be rung by the 8th day. The leg should be big enough to stop the ring falling off.

.... But if the leg is too big at 8 days then the chick has developed quickly and could develop to something special.

i have had chicks that are hard to ring at 8 days..

Both of these birds are 21 days old....

8th Day... I have a great program called Bird Tracker that tells me what day to ring, what day the eggs should hatch, what day to transfer to the Nappy Cage.

But my main program is the budgerigar program,.

okay so if im ringing chicks at 5 to 6 days and ring is not coming off this is good thing

i was worried my chicks were growing wrong but you were just saying if the chick is rung after eight day and ring does not stay on then you would be like mmmmmm

If your ringing at 5th or 6th day GREAT :(

I wouldn't be too worried if you are ringing with an ANBC approved ring.. :(
