September 19, 200618 yr Ummm. No idea on weight, but your question should be: How much should a budgie weigh?
September 19, 200618 yr According to that chart, they can weigh 20 grams (incredibly tiny!) to 70 grams (incredibly overweight!) Generally, a standard budgie who is not overweight weighs 25 (usually when young) to 35 grams. An english budgie can weigh up to 50-60 depending on the individual bird. Of course, it's really hard to give a definite range as all birds are different. We have to look at other signs such as the keel bone. That seems to be a good indicator of an overweight budgie. Fat budgies have excess padding over the keel (chest) bone and it often sticks out when they sit. Fat budgies have a harder time flying and become winded faster or just can't keep themselves in the air for very long. Here's a pretty good article that talks about problems with overweight parrots: http://www.birdtalkmagazine.com/bt/detail....=3608&category= When it comes to budgies, specifically, the keel bone is a good thing to go by. And I've seen several pictures of extremely overweight budgies floating around here lately so this was a good topic to bring up!
September 19, 200618 yr Author Thanks Terri good article. I suppose it's a bit like us. My perfect weight is 82kg but when I got to it I was deemed under weight for my size. A bettter weight for me was 85kg. unfortunately i'm back up to 90kg. Got to do more excersize. Same with Budgies. A short fat budgie could be over weight but a tall long bird could be under weight. George flys every day 24/7 unless sleeping and has a 260square meter aviary. Some say he is fat. Can't see that as he is on low fat see with vegitables. He gets millet once a week and some oats occasionally. It's just his build. As put in the article he doesn't pant after flying. Edited September 19, 200618 yr by daz
