Posted September 18, 200618 yr Hi, I purchased my first budgie Saturday, I bought him home and set him up in his new cage. He has a few toys in there. He hasnt chirped since we bought him home and im worried that he isnt happy with his new home. When i woke up this morning he was sitting at the bottom of his cage up the corner with his eyes shut. when i returned to the cage 15 minutes later he was up the other corner of the cage. he has stayed there for an hour. ive had to come to work now and feel terrible that he is at home and i dont know what to do. ive asked my partner to go home and check on him but he wont be there for another 2 hours. im not sure how budgies behave as i have never had one before. I also left the cage door open all day yesterday whilst i was in the same room. He looked like he wasnt interested. Hes also not eating or drinking out of his correct dishes. i have had to put temporary ones at the bottom of his cage as i did not want him to starve or get dehidrated. Any information would be really appreciated. Thank you
September 18, 200618 yr If he's sitting on the cage floor it sounds like he's sick. Is he puffed up and are his poops runny? I think a trip to an avian vet would be a good idea, hope he's okay.

September 18, 200618 yr He could possibly be shy and just getting used to his new home and surroundings. My first budgie was very quite at first too. Just to ease your mind if he doesn't become more active, like bea said take him to the vet for a check up. :budgiedance:
September 18, 200618 yr I'd definitely have him checked out by an avian vet as this doesn't sound quite normal. Usually, a new budgie will choose a high spot in the cage and stay there (though it IS normal for them to be very shy and quiet). Budgies instinctively choose high perches as they feel quite vulnerable on the ground. It's possible he feels safer in the corner of the cage, but it would be a very good idea to have him checked out just in case. In the meantime, cover at least one half of the cage so he has a higher "corner" to hide in and see if he gravitates toward that spot instead. If you need any help locating an avian vet, let us know! Hope he perks up soon.
September 18, 200618 yr How old is your new budgie ? Some people sell their babies too young and before they are eating or flying properly. I just wonder about the age.
