okay, I know I rescue, and that there is plenty of animals needing help, but I really would like to breed a pair of my non rescue budgies to keep all of them here on the farm, NOW that being said, will budgies inbreed? meaning after i breed mom to dad, and say i have brothers and sisters do they need to be separated when older?

this is not something i'm looking to do taday, I have far to much research to do first,

Yes they will in breed if you let them having good records is best so you can watch who is doing what and need to split up them if need be.

You have certainly come to the right place....

I know you checked out Budgie Hilton posted by Bubbles she is excellent at keeping records and has done open avairy and is doing closed breeding. A good person to reference with when you are looking at a person who care about her birds and ensures the best for them.

There are also other members on a smaller scale that breed too Daz, Nerwen, Hath, Hommer and even more members who have excellent advice and life experience with breeding.

I colony bred the first year, with 4 unrelated pair. since then, i have pulled pairs to breed in breeding cages. I have 20+ in the aviary, related & unrelated, and all but 1 pair have stayed together, even that pair, the male stayed with his original partner, but got an extra girlfriend!

are you planning on keeping them in an aviary? if so, just dont give them nesting boxes, and only breed by pulling specific pairs you want to breed. if you happen to see a related pair mate, either pull one, or just take her eggs if she lays them.

good luck!

:(Laughing out loud): extra girlfriend :P

familys can stay together in an avairy with out any nest boxes fine, I had a daughter bonding very strongly with her father, I left them be until she started laying eggs then gave her a two weeks time out. She didn't brood these just laied them to drop to the floor.

One thing to remember when Inbreeding / line breeding is that you enhanse the features... Good and Bad. As lovey said, you must keep good records...... and ask plenty of questions. :P

yup, mine are one big happy family with a few new store bought "cousins" added in !

my gay boys, were the twin brothers from last years clutch, the were thick as theives, had no interest in the gals, just each other. where one boy went the other followed. sadly luey was one of the 3 that passed away last month, so maybe now, huey will look for love now!

and yes, without the next boxes in the aviary, on a few mated and only 1 pair had eggs, this was the pair i pulled out and put into the breeding cage.
