Posted September 12, 200618 yr Well, I have tried again to get the the budgies onto pellets. After the problem with the seed, I have no interest in using it again! I tried to get them in the aviary on pellets before, and gave up after 2 weeks. Well this time I used a different brand, Roudybush. I used either exact or kaytee last time. I use Roudybush with the conures, but it is pricey, so went a little cheeper when I tried before, and it didnt work! Anyway, this time it took 2 weeks and they are 100% converted. I used tough love this time. I bulked up their fruits, veggies and soak mix, and only did 1/3 seed to 2/3 pellets, and each day cut out a little more seed. last time i did 1/2 & 1/2. I knew they were not going to starve where they had the extra of their veggies etc. And with the 20+ budgies, it worked wonders. Monkey see, monkey do, they are all eating it now, 100% pellets!!! So yay! less mess in the aviary, less chance of wild birds coming by with their cooties eating seeds of the patio, and maybe the darn rat will leave!!! (Laughing out loud) yay budgies!
September 13, 200618 yr i've read it before. but when you look at the overall lifelong health of a bird, pellets are better for me & my birds. considering i've HAD 3 BIRDS DIE from seed in less than a month, for us, its better to go with seed. My avian vet, that has 25+ years experience as a breeder and vet, recomended the brand i use. and also my local breeders use it too. so am confident in the quality of it. also, the cleanliness of the aviary is a big concern. pellets help a lot in keeping the aviary clean. not just the inside, but the outside too. I dont want wild birds coming onto the patio to eat the seeds that have been thrown out, expecially with the threat of bird flu popping up anytime! plus, it will keep the rodent problem to a minimum
September 13, 200618 yr Just make sure they still get a little seed in their diets, all pellets is a bit much in protein and can cause renal failure (just as all seed causes a host of other problems). Lots of healthy variety is most important. Congrats on the conversion, I bet you'll see a bit of a difference with their next molt.
September 13, 200618 yr They get a very well balanced Diet, fruits and veggies everyday, with their soak mix. their soak mix includes, beans corn, peas, lentles, and rice. (why is it that when i first got onto the forums, everyone that used seed was chastisized that they should use pellets, never seed, its just so bad. now everyone lately seems to push seed again?)
September 14, 200618 yr (why is it that when i first got onto the forums, everyone that used seed was chastisized that they should use pellets, never seed, its just so bad. now everyone lately seems to push seed again?) because the internet is a great thing but can be a bad thing as well i know doubt could find great sites for pellets and great sites for seeds its how you want to preceive things i've never advocated pellets i have always used seed with the usual veg ext but one thing i do look at is reports like the link i gave
September 14, 200618 yr I think I will go with the knowledge and education of my avian vet for now, but will talk to her in 2 weeks when i go for our check up Edited September 14, 200618 yr by Thirtyfive Black
