Jewel Laid An Egg - More To Come?

Featured Replies

My creamino, Jewel, laid an egg yesterday. I noticed that she had been really interested in the fuzzy hut I had hanging in the cage. I had just removed her and put her in another cage because I thought she might be seeing the hut as a nest. She had also been very friendly with little Max. I had never seen them mate, but lots of feeding was going on.

Her vent started looking red. I thought it might possibly be an egg but also thought she may have rubbed off the feathers going in and out of the fuzzy hut so many times. She seemed fine otherwise. Well last night I went to check on her in the new cage and sure enough a little egg was broken on the bottom of the cage.

So will she lay more? If I throw the eggs will she continue to lay? Should I let her just sit on them (but addle them) so she'll stop - I read that in my budgie book.

I do want babies someday but don't think she is old enough. I don't know how old she is because I got her from a petsore, but assumed she was a baby when I got her which would make her less than a year. I'm pretty sure that Max is about 6 months because of the changes in his cere.

I know that under a year hatching babies is not good for their health but now that the laying has started, how do I keep her from laying more?

HI,

I am fairly new to the forum and to the whole budgie lover scene, but from my research, you probably should addle the eggs and let her sit on them, but make sure that you don't leave that nest thing with her after she is done sitting on the eggs or she will just lay more as soon as you take the ones she has.

The other possibility if she hasn't already laid more eggs is that she wont lay anymore as long as her nest is out of sight. You obviously know that it is dangerous for her to be trying to breed so young.

I am sure that others will answer your questions. Please believe them before me as they are most likely to be more experienced than I am.

good luck with her.

If you don't have anything in her cage that she views as a nest, she should just stop laying. If by chance another egg does appear on the floor of the cage and is intact, you can leave it if you'd like. She will probably lose interest in it after a day or so. Obviously if it is broken or cracked, take it out. Is she still in a cage with Max, or is she by herself?

No, I put her in with a female. He is missing her though. Poor little guy! She seems okay without him.

She should stop laying then. Slightly different scenario here, but I know from my own experience, when Skittles laid an egg after I took her away from babies and Rainbow she laid one on the floor of the cage, then didn't lay anymore. Had I left her in the cage with Rainbow and a nest box, I'm certain she would have continued to lay eggs (fertile I'm sure-they were worse than rabbits, LOL). She had already raised 2 clutches and this would have been the start of the third. :ausb: I believe at that point she would have done everything she could have to raise even more babies. Nothing bad happened to her by stopping the egg-laying in the midst of her fertility, their bodies can stop egg production if necessary. (I thought I'd throw that in just in case you were worried that something awful might happen if you stopped the process. It won't. :))

okay. Well glad to hear it. Thanks for the info!

:ausb: Best of luck Shawna, Coco laid 10 and then cut it out this time, earlier in the summer I had to get her shots, she lives alone. But then we know that I have EGGceptional problems here. :)

Thanks Phoebe. I'm hoping that the water on the east coast is a little less potent! Day 2 and no more eggs!!!
