Sterilising A Cage After Mites

Featured Replies

For those of you that dont know, I had a budgie with mites that died from a mite jab gone wrong 2 months ago and ever since his cage has been sitting in the garage.

Now looking at my boy Pepsi in his smaller cage i am wondering if i ought to transfer him to the bigger cage.

Either that or i may or may not be getting a baby budgie to go in there instead as its easier to access them in montys old cage but either way i'm going to need to give it a good clean.

As you can imagine i'm terrified that i'm going to somehow pass on mites from the cage to another bird but cant really afford vet style antibacterial stuff.

I have bleach at home, dish washing liquid, a dishwasher (if it decides to work - rather unlikely as its stuffed) antibacterial soap and spray n wipe. Can i use any of them on the cage and if so how much of what?

Looking forward to hearing from you so that i can get pepsi moved or another lil guy in there.

Thanks heaps in advance :hap:

When cleaning my cage I just used normal household disinfectant to scrub it, then made sure I rinsed it well afterwards.

So technically after 2 months i should just be safe giving it a bit of hot water and detergent scrub and then lots of rinsing and that should be enough?

I"m just so paranoid ya know? dont wanna loose anymore birds! Not that i'd ever get mite jabs done again!

Thanks ppl

Yeah i know how you feel, see what some other people have to say because i've never dealt with scaly face before this.

If it were me, I would soak the cage in a mild (10 parts water : 1 part bleach) bleach solution, rinse extremely well, then use a toothbrush and regular dish soap to scrub all the corners and places where the little buggers could have crawled. Let it air dry until you can't smell bleach anymore. I would buy all new perches, seed/water cups, and toys. That may be overkill after two months, but better safe than sorry.
