Hen's "ready" Cere

Featured Replies

I have been reading about people who know their hen is ready to breed by the color of her cere. It would be great if someone would post a picture of a "ready" hen's cere for me.

Thanks

Thanks Shant, that is very helpful. My girl's cere is lighter than that. I think my male is very very ready to mate. He keeps trying but she just sidesteps and beggs him to feed her anyway. They groom eachother and they are getting very close, but she is just not ready.

Thanks again,

Shell

I am no expert by any stretch of the imagination but just going on my "Cloud", 3 weeks ago her cere was quite pale and now it has gone very dark. She is also flirting with Beau, and in and out of the nesting box, just this past week. So it may not take very much longer until your hen is ready for a family. Although do be sure she is over a year old, closer to two yo would be even better, and then she is more prepared to be a good Mum.

I am in no real hurry. She is old enough according to her breeder. And I am looking forward to babies. am content to wait till they are ready for it.

I still have Sunshine's egg (she died after laying it) in a bowl with nesting material on a heating pad. There have been changes in the egg, but I am not an experienced candeler so I am not sure if it is alive or not. I will just wait and see. It was laid on the first of september and I started incubating on the second. So if it is going to hatch it will be on about the 19th. I have hand-fed new hatched sparrows and amazons succesfully so I do have some experience. Well, we shall see.

Thanks again,

Shell
