Posted September 9, 200618 yr I haven't been on here for a while, mainly because my four little munchkins have been doing quite well. So, I have 4 budgies. All are of age to breed. Though I think one of them is not in breeding condition. I put in the nestbox a few weeks ago. They didn't like it at first. They were scared etc. But now... Newton (my female) constantly pops in and out, it's been going on for a week (approx). She chews up the wood and seems to enjoy herself. I don't think she has a mate though.... so I'm wondering if she's going to lay eggs? Or if she's just liking the box as a little hangout? I'd really love to have little chicks, but I don't think my birdies get the idea of a nestbox. Is that possible? thanks!
September 9, 200618 yr It sounds like she is getting the nest box ready and as for the chewing, she is in condition. If she has a mate you should see the first egg very soon. Approximately 9 days from when she get really interested in the nest box.
September 11, 200618 yr You said you have 4 birds are they all in the same cage? You may need another nest or 2 if you have more than 1 female.
September 11, 200618 yr If they are all in the same cage I would strongly suggest removing all birds except the breeding hen and her chosen mate to another cage until they are finished breeding. Otherwise you are just asking for trouble, unfortunately.
September 13, 200618 yr Author I agree with Lady and Rainbow. The others will compete and fight. the thing is, there's no fighting and no one else cares about the nestbox except for Newton and she just seems to go in so she can chew up wood. I don't think they get the point. haha
September 13, 200618 yr If she is chewing the timber she is in condition for breeding. Hope they start to get along.
