Posted September 9, 200618 yr Hi, Wondering if people could pass on some ideas on what to do with leftover seed etc. With a dozen birds we have alot and as we have just bought a bigger aviary this is only going to increase. At the moment we put it in the compost bin and I have heard of growing it and feeding the greens back to the birds. Would love to hear other ideas or just what you do with it at present ? Thanks Jule :feedbirds:
September 9, 200618 yr I tried growing seed in a little dish with some dirt once and it worked, Buster was pretty interested in eating the sprouts.
September 9, 200618 yr There is a "maichine" you can get or make that will remove the old husks and rubbish from the seed for reuse. I am trying to remember the name... its like whinner or something like that. You can make one that you vacuum works with..
September 12, 200618 yr I throw most of my old seed on the verge to grow for my birds. But, you can dehusk the seed yourself. Put the seed in a bucket, and pour it into another bucket from about 2 feet away. Do this outside, as the husk will blow away, and the seed will fall into the bucket. Do it a few times and you should end up with all seed and no husk
