Update On Too Many Eggs

Featured Replies

After one of my hens hatched 6 of her nine eggs (remember I had already disposed of two previously) and the other hatched 5 of her 8 (her 2nd clutch) I got Aaron to come and pick them up, made sure they were still all nice and warm when he got home so he could put them under his hen. Well one hatched the very next day, but the hen attacked the chick. He removed the rest of the eggs and put them under another hen and she is accepting them with another egg due tomorrow.

You may think this was an odd thing to do, but I thought 8 and 9 was too much for any to cope with, plus the fact the nesting box would have been very cramped. This way they have a chance to hatch which I thought was better than throwing them away.

I or Aaron will let you know how it all turns out.

Oh! we did colour code the eggs

I hope so too. I can't wait to hear from Aaron tomorrow.

I've got everything crossed

Cindy what you did was exactly right.

I have taken a nest box away from a pair that is tending their second clutch of 4 I don't want her to have another one so I removed the nest box. She laid another egg today. I don't have another pair to give it to so have it dormant.

Nerwen do you want it. It is will probibly be a yellow face Sky blue or cobalt. 50% ganzer 50% gearing.

Give me a pm.

hello everyone, one of the babys that was due today hatch is alive and is being tooked after the new mum i only looked once so i dont know if the other one has hatched yet by as soon i know i will let you all know. :P

One thing to mention is that if you are going to foster eggs, make sure it is at the beginning or at the end of the incubation period.

Some hens sit differently to others and this will effect the chicks if half developed. A hen that sits tighter will heat up the eggs more.
