Posted September 9, 200618 yr A lot of people on my forum (this one is in french) have problems with scaly face. Especially those members in France. They use a lot of Stronghold for kittens (Selamectin) for curing their birds, even the vets use it. At the same time, I find that they have a lot more infertility problems than what seem to be common elsewhere. Do you think that the use of these medications could cause long term infertility?Have you read anything which could help me figure this out? I know that there should be a rest period after Ivermectin or other medications have been taken before resuming reproduction. Any ideas?
September 9, 200618 yr I'm not at all sure, maybe becuase they have a bigger problem with the mites that the sickness is the cuase of the lowered infertiility rather than the treatment.
September 9, 200618 yr As I have posted before, for low type infection use petrolium jelly or baby oil. It will help and is not toxic.
September 9, 200618 yr Wow! if there is a connection there. I have two budgies that did have really bad scaly mite. both were treated quiet aggressively (with an injection), and neither of them have been able to reproduce, maybe there is a connection it would explain things around here.
September 9, 200618 yr At a time or two when I used invermectin to treat scaly face, I had NO difference in fertility with my birds at all. I must stress though that I used the spot on method, not injection. My personal opinion is I hesitate to use the injection method where the topical method seems to work without danger of overdosing. Also, to consider is...at what stage the scaly face has got to before treatment begins...which may affect the birds wellbeing and state of overall health before treatment and also affect their recovery process ?
September 9, 200618 yr I agree with Bubbles, I think too many people panick when faced with scaley face because it is an ugly desease/inflection. It is easy to treat your bird and get rid of it, the real problem is to get it out of your aviary. If you want to use a medication. Vetafarm produces Scatt and from what I hear from beeders it works. But you need to treat your perches, cages and breeding boxes. I use AVIAN INSECT LIQUIDATOR around the aviary, breeding cages and nest boxes. I should contact Veta Farm to see if I could get a spoters fee,
September 9, 200618 yr ive used Ivermectin and so have a lot of people in the club and have never had a problem mind you ive never heard of it being injected
September 9, 200618 yr Most of us are using the spot on treatment. One spot per approx 30 gram bird...between the wings at the back of the neck. Sometimes makes the bird a bit sleepy for 20 mins or so but I have had no bad results. Easier and safer than injections. Scatt....that Daz has told you about is also invermectin. My avian vet makes his own and sells it in small bottles with a dropper top on it for ease of use. It costs me $9 per bottle and that goes a very long way.
September 9, 200618 yr I've never heard of it being used that way but there are obviously a lot of different methods of treating with ivermectin out there.
September 9, 200618 yr does anybody paint it on? or know of anyone thats done it this way? I have never heard of it myself. But I wonder if your vet has given you solution of perhaps an oil with a small percentage of invermectin in it, and not the strength of invermectin we are using as a spot on treatment ?
September 9, 200618 yr yeah he did say it was diluted in propylene glycol or something like that. Said it didn't matter if he swallowed it when we were painting it on. I'll just keep an eye on him and see how he gets on. Ive to phone if i have any problems. Thanks again
September 10, 200618 yr Author Bubbles, Scatt is moxidectin and Stronghold is selamectin. There is different ways to use Ivermectin, I looked it up because I was curious when I read in this forum that is was injected and given orally. It works perfectly well when used topically, even on advanced cases. They talk about it on Exotic Pet Vet. Vet to vet, Mites and lice. Of mites and men. http://www.exoticpetvet.net/

September 18, 200717 yr I have used the spot on type Ivermectin here in Australia. I have had a few cases of infertility, but I think they are just normal, I think that if birds were given a really large overdose it could occur. But I have had a few accidents of small overdoses, but couldn’t really connect it to any infertility. I have read of symptoms of overdose, but in the amounts in accidents I have experienced I saw no symptoms except annoyance, which normally occurs for a short time after dosing anyway. Just rubbing beak on perch etc. I dose on the bare patch under the beak. I accidentally introduced Scaly into my aviary with new birds, soon lots were getting symptoms, I treated once every bird, with the once spot on treatment, nothing else & treat every new bird now before introduction & have never had a reoccurrence. I have never heard before of the injection of it. Ivermectin is extracted from a Japanese fungus.
