Posted September 7, 200618 yr Oh my goodness, my poor little Oscar has Scaly Face!!! Just had him at the vet because i noticed some tiny wee holes round the edges of his beak. They have given me Ivermectin to paint on his beak - he's going to love that!!! Even the thought of it is making me itchy!
September 7, 200618 yr I thought Ivermectin was spot on treatment to the back of the neck or are there different way to put the meds on?? Poor little man but it sounds like you caught it super early.
September 7, 200618 yr I also wonder how he got it! Anyway, you caught it early and it'll go away in no time at all. You've probably seen it already but in Health there's a pinned topic that shows before and after of one of my budgies really ultra bad scaly face, only took about 2 weeks to go away with ivermectin.
September 7, 200618 yr Author thanks guys the vet reckons he's had it since he was born - wonder why you couldn't see it though? maybe i just never spotted it?? I think you can use the treatment in different ways because the vet says that it can also be given orally. what do you guys use to treat it? thanks Bea i had seen your post when i was looking for pictures to find out if thats what was wrong with him! he looked like he made a full recovery?? I felt so sorry for him - the poor soul screamed for the entire time the vet held him! he's running about like a mad thing now though!
September 8, 200618 yr Blinkie screamed when he had to go to the vets too. They just like making us feel bad. When i used ivermectin it was one drop behind the neck, like a flea treatment for dogs.
September 9, 200618 yr I'm hearing stuff about the use of ivermectin on this forum I have never heard before. Painted on the beak, given orally and by injection??? I always tought it was given topically but then I add a look at at pet vet . net in the vet to vet section and all this is supposed to be O.K. September 9, 200618 yr I always thought that invermectin was a topical application too. My thoughts were that applied to the shoulder blades meant that the bird couldnt get it in its mouth and so reduce the chance of poisoning itself to a degree. It is a surprise that it is given orally or painted on the beak. Also, any injections given to birds seems to be possible to go wrong as we have heard many times of birds that died after some injections ( not all to do with invermectin). Interesting. But I think I will stick with the drop on the back of the neck / shoulder blades application. Edited September 9, 200618 yr by Bubbles
September 9, 200618 yr Poor Oscar! My Monty got it almost 4 or 5 months after I got him but my avian vet says it can lay dormant for almost a year so quarantine doesn't guarantee that they won't pass it along. The good news is that he will improve quickly after treatment. :ausb: Sigh.
September 9, 200618 yr Author Yeah ive been reading up on it and it says that it doesn't usually appear until about 6-12 months of age. I have to say that he is looking a bit better already - don't know if thats because the vet scraped some of it away though. Thanks for all the advice guys. Thanks for the link Martine. I only put the ivermectin on every 10 days so we will see how he gets on in a few weeks. fingers crossed!
September 9, 200618 yr Cheeky it might pay to spray around the cage and on the perches with a good Avian Insecticde. To get rid of any other mites.
September 9, 200618 yr Author yeah i did ask the vet about that but he said that they can't survive outside the budgie's body. Do you know of a good insectiside i can use or would dettol do? I was also abit worried about me kissing him! eeww! Thanks Daz
September 9, 200618 yr We have a few here in Australia. Vetfarm comes out with some. Do you get this brand in Scotland?
September 9, 200618 yr Author i've never heard of it but to be honest i've never looked for anything like it before. I'll have a hunt and see if i can find it. thanks
September 9, 200618 yr Very interesting about them not showing up until later...glad you caught it. How is our little Oscar doing
September 9, 200618 yr Author He's as cheeky as ever - running riot at the moment! He's doing okay i think - still got another week or so before he gets his next treatment but if it looks like its getting worse ill be straight onto the vet. Think im going to use vaseline on his feet just in case - they don't appear to be infected but i just want to make sure.
