Posted September 24, 200420 yr Hey. I was reading a budgerigar breeding/maintenance book from the 1970's [i.e written in the 1970s], and it mentioned that any budgies with incurable disease or a harsh physical defect. I have not seen this discussed anywhere else on modern sources, and I was wondering if it was still done. How would you humanely 'destroy' them? What 'level' of severity of infliction would it have to pass to be destroyed? I'm just curious about this matter, and want to see it addressed, as I have not seen it mentioned anywhere else, and it is obviously an important matter as these things do happen. Thanks.
September 24, 200420 yr when they say destroying i think it is just the same as being put to sleep, i have heard this used in dogs/horses before but never birds (?!?!)
September 24, 200420 yr Yes I would imagine that's what they meant, but I was wondering if it was still done with such cases, and how one would go about doing it?
September 24, 200420 yr i can see in some cases it would be a 'mercy killing' if you will forgive me for using that phrase which i hate, but like horses, if it gets to a point that they cant do anything and they lose the will to live... but idk cos most will stop eating and do it themselves... thats what my peanut did ::sniffle:: and my sapphire had all kinds of problems - she had surgery, but they said she still might not have been okay. well she didnt ever wake all the way up, she we'll never know :bluebudgie:
September 26, 200420 yr it can be done at home there are different methods i have heard from people but as whether they are humane is another thing
September 26, 200420 yr yeah thats what i was wondering because a lot of places i bet wouldnt waste to 'waste money' on a budgie. (now where have i heard that before? <_< )
October 24, 200420 yr IMHO, the only humane way to destroy/mercykill/put down a budgie is to take it to the vet and have it done properly. I also believe that in most cases, if the budgie is a very yuong chick, nature will act accordingly. If its an older bird, and has been hurt, or suffered some sort of illness that has left it without a decent quality of life, then off to the vet it should go. I do know of methods to kill a bird (diy job) but would never use or share them.
