Death Of Sunshine

Featured Replies

Hi,

My hen Sunshine layed her first egg today and had a cloacal relapse. She died tonight. I have only had her for a month. I know it may have been due to dietary issues prior to getting here. What I am wondering is... if I get another female tomorrow, might she brood this single egg? Is there hope for this little baby?

I am sorry to hear about your Sunshine. The egg will only be good if in fact it is fertile (did she have a mate and did you see them mate ?) and NO....another bird will not take over incubating the egg under the circumstances you have just stated. If, for instance, you had a hen with eggs already....you could put the egg in with her eggs. But a new bird will not incubate the egg just like that. Your new bird would be more interested in her new surroundings. They are only interested in eggs with a male budgie they are paired up to and if they have already started a clutch of their own. If you have another budgie ( and maybe you do from your profile which says you have 2 budgies ).....you would also have to quarantine the new bird away from the bird you still have for at least a month. This allows for any transferable diseases to show up and be treated without causing a problem for the bird you have. Your bird Sunshine may have had that problem also if she was too young to breed with as it is common in birds that lay eggs too young.

Cheers karen
