Claustrophobic Budgie?

I haven't had too many experiances with Budgies, but my first never did this.

'Duo' a four month old male whenever let out of his cage will walk (clipped) around until he finds himself in a very tight location (he could get out if he wanted to, but he seems too skittish to try) then squark until he a) tires out or :budgiedance: I remove him.

This includes behind massive peices of furniture, under clothes, behind curtains, etc etc. If it's dark and theres only one way in/out, he'll get in there and the **** hits the fan.

Right now he has got himself behind a small DVD cabinet. He squarked for about five minutes now is just quiet but still in the same position.

This is making it so the bird can never be released out of the cage. You can imagine why when it takes a good half an hour to get him out from behind a bookshelf.

Get him a playgym and keep a close eye on him when he's out. You'll have to teach him to stay off the floor, it's very dangerous, as I'm sure you know.

It can be frustrating, but with close supervision you'll be able to let him out of the cage safely. If you think he's trying to hide, get him a little box to put on the playgym or something equally hidey.

I reckon it's a devil bird and it's just doing it to give me the shits. :budgiedance:

Right now the ground is the only place as having both wings clipped means he can barely jump 6" up. His cage is raised, has a ladder to climb up and into it.

However if he does a dive bomb (off my shoulder for example) and he lands somewhere where he doesn't have line of sight with his cage he goes wandering. Which generally means find a small crevice and wedge your way in, find it's dark, get ****-scared and wait for rescue.

Same deal with playgym. It's no good when he feels the need to glide unelegently downwards off it.

well I have taught Pretty to stay off my curtain tops and I am sure you can do the same. Does your bird like to be misted? If not that is a good way to teach them some spots are just not good.

Pretty & Merlin were both clipped but I kept him off the floor (Terri is right) it is dangerous and in fact I have read how people have accidently stepped on their budgies and injured them.

They have a play gym that they end up landing on and they also play on top of their cage.

If you work with them persistantly the end result will be what you want.

Granted my 2 fly all over the place but remember they land back on their gym . And to encourage flight I play with them. I don't have to encourage Merlin he just follow Pretty.
